As a number of Cash App users find their accounts in negative funds, we take a look at why the mobile payment service has been ‘double charging’.

Technology glitches are never fun to encounter, especially not if they impact your money. Naturally, panic broke out when several Cash App users began to report a glitch had affected their accounts this June. Let’s take a look at what Cash App has said about the accounts suddenly dropping to negative funds.

Why is my Cash App negative?

Some Cash App users might be surprised by a negative balance as some accounts are being affected by a glitch. Users began reporting the problem on Monday, June 26.

Those affected reported that they are being double-charged on their transactions. For anyone using the mobile payment app to pay significant sums or hold a large number of funds, this comes as quite a shock.

This is predominantly the result of a glitch and the double charge. But your account funds could be in the negative for delayed charges. Charges occasionally appear on your Cash App account long after you’ve paid for something. This is because the sale might place a temporary hold on your funds rather than clearing them instantly.

Cash App will refund customers affected by double charge

Shortly after reports emerged about the double charge glitch, Cash App updated its status page with a statement.

“Our team is aware of an issue causing duplicate Cash Card transactions, which is making some customers see a negative account balance,” Cash App announced on Monday.

They have since posted a status update (June 27) addressing the “technical issue.” Cash App announced they “fixed the issue” and “have begun notifying impacted customers and are issuing refunds.”

Balances should be updated by the end of day on Tuesday, June 27.

We recently discovered a technical issue with Cash Card that caused some customers to get charged double the amount for certain transactions. We've fixed the issue. We have begun notifying impacted customers and are issuing refunds. Customers will see balances updated by EOD.

Negative accounts renew concerns over mobile payments

The June 2023 glitch has reiterated concerns about the safety and protection of mobile payment apps.

Earlier this month, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned that your money is at greater risk when placed in money-sharing apps. This is because the funds do not receive the same federal protections that consumers would get at a bank.

As such, the CFPB recommends holding funds in an account with federal deposit insurance. This means that your money is protected in the instance of theft or if the nonbank payment company fails. Money kept in banks or credit union accounts is insured if the bank or union fails.

For anyone with a Cash Card, up to $250,000 of your Cash App account balance is covered by FDIC insurance, a representative from the company informs HITC.
