Slater, then 25, was abducted in Birmingham by murderer Michael Sams, who was posing as a home buyer. After her employer, the Shipways Estate Agency in Great Barr, West Midlands, paid the ransom, she was finally released.

She was driven from Birmingham to Sams’ workshop in Newark, Nottinghamshire, while bound and gagged. She was confined in a wooden box inside a wheeled crate after being handcuffed and electrodes placed in her legs.

Sams admitted to kidnapping Slater, holding her captive and demanding £175,000 ransom from her employers. Slater then contributed to his conviction for the 1991 murder of Julie Dart, 18, of Leeds.
