He graduated from Canyon del Oro High School in Oro Valley, Arizona. Before enrolling at Stanford University on a scholarship. He played linebacker for the Cardinal for two seasons and was selected to the first team All-Pac-12 team in 2015. Rivals gave Martinez a rating of three stars as an inside linebacker.

From universities like Stanford, Boise State, Oregon State, and San Jose State, among others, he earned numerous scholarship offers. Additionally, Arizona, Arizona State, Northern Arizona, Oregon, and San Diego State expressed interest in him. On August 1, 2011, he finally signed his letter of intent to play for Stanford.
