The Real World and the now-canceled Road Rules are the two reality shows on the network from which The Challenge (previously known as Road Rules: All Stars, Real World/Road Rules Challenge) is a spin-off.
It has former cast members from these two shows as well as ‘Fresh Meat’ and Are You the One? alumni competing against each other for a cash prize. T. J. Lavin is the Challenge’s current host.
First airing on June 1, 1998, was the series. The show’s original title was Road Rules: All Stars, but in its second season, it changed to Real World/Road Rules Challenge. In its 19th season, it was abbreviated to just The Challenge.

Originally, “Mr.” or “Ms. Big” assignments were provided by a former cast member who had been fired from the show; David “Puck” Rainey, David Edwards, and Gladys Sanabria were the hosts in this capacity. Subsequently, though, the show started having hosts: Jonny Moseley and Dave Mirra hosted a few seasons, Eric Nies and Mark Long co-hosted a season, and by the eleventh season, T. J. Lavin was the regular presenter.
