For those who weren’t in attendance at this years San Diego Comic Con, Warner Bros. has just released the sneak preview footage of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad that debuted at the event. The internet was treated to a low quality leak that was captured by a fan during the conference, but it’s go nothing on the real thing. Now fans around the world can peep Margot Robbie, Will Smith, and Jai Courtney as members of the anti-hero organization. Also in attendance is Jared Leto as the Joker, about to not kill someone per say, but hurt them really bad. The trailer, while clocking in at three minutes, gives very little away, spending most of it’s time admiring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Deadshot. There’s some shots of Killer Croc in full makeup and Batman clinging to the top of a shiny purple car.
The trailer is wildly effective. It shows just enough to get fans and newbies alike hyped for the movie, which isn’t slated for release until next August. It seems that David Ayer has taken some creative license with the characters, adding his signature urban style to the villains. Despite reeking of DC’s dark and gritty approach, Suicide Squad seems to have something that a lot of the Hollywood superhero fare is missing: a distinct style. The Marvel movies have been homogenized to the point of being nearly identical and the DC entries are mired in desaturated CGI. It’s refreshing to see a comic book movie trailer that doesn’t feature a helicarrier crashing into whatever city is supposed to blow up next. For those worried about the look of Joker, you’re worst fears have been realized. He has the grills. He has the tattoos. However, in terms of the trailer’s vibe, it’s oddly fitting. If you’re wondering what that song in the background is, it’s a cover of The Bee Gees classic “I Started A Joke.”
