ONE of Britain’s oldest homes, which dates back to 1066 and comes with its own lordship, has gone on the market for £7.45million.

The Grade II-listed Marston Hall was once owned by a courtier to Henry VIII and sits in over 500 acres of Derbyshire countryside.

The manor house boasts seven bedrooms and four reception rooms as well as a self-contained apartment.

While the estate in Marston-on-Dove, Derbys., can trace its roots to the Battle of Hastings the main hall was built in 1740 before being substantially enlarged in 1887.

Its ownership can be split into just three distinct periods.

Firstly, from 1066 it belonged to the crown, then in the middle ages it was given to Sir William Cavendish by Henry VIII, who passed it on to his heirs.

Then in 1919 the Spurrier family bought it from the Duke Of Devonshire.

A spokesperson for estate agent Fisher German, which is handling the sale, said: "We understand that the Lordship of the Manor can be transferred to the purchaser of the estate.

"The sale of this attractive estate presents a rare opportunity.

"Marston Hall is an impressive property with an extensive range of traditional farm buildings that form three courtyards.

"There are also some useful modern farm buildings.

"In addition to the hall there is a substantial farmhouse with its own range of traditional and modern buildings as well as six further cottages."

The estate agent brochure states: "Marston Hall displays its Georgian and Victorian heritage with classic architecture of the period with 'ashlar block'-rendered walls beneath pitched slate roofs.

"The elevations have fine fenestration, mainly with traditional sash windows and with Virginia creeper and climbing hydrangea giving the house a lovely mellow appearance."
