Saul Bellow was born on 10 July 1915, his birthplace was Lachine, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was born Solomon Bellows, 2 years after his parents, Lescha Bellow and Abraham Bellows, migrated from Saint Petersburg, Russia.

He had 3 elder siblings – sister Zelda, and brothers Moishe and Schmuel. Saul’s family was Lithuanian-Jewish and his father was born in Vilnius. Saul learned to speak Yiddish, Hebrew, and French as well as English. When he was 9 his family moved to Chicago, Illinois.

Saul Bellow Death

Saul passed away on 5 April 2005, in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States of America, at the age of 89 years old. He died due to natural causes at the age of 89.

Saul Bellow Awards

For his literary work, Saul was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Medal of Arts.

Saul is the only Author to win the National Book Award for Fiction 3 times, and he received the National Book Foundation’s lifetime Medal. He received this medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 1990.

Saul’s best-known works include Henderson the Rain King, The Adventures of Augie March,  Herzog, Seize the Day, Mr. Sammler’s Planet, Humboldt’s Gift, and Ravelstein.

Saul was married 5 times, with all but his last marriage ending in divorce. Saul’s wives were Anita Goshkin, Alexandra (Sondra) Tsachacbasov, Susan Glassman, Alexandra Ionescu Tulcea, and Janis Freedman.

Saul Bellow Children

Saul’s son Greg Bellow by his first marriage with Anita Goshkin, who became a psychotherapist; he published Bellow’s Heart: A Son’s Memoir in 2013, almost a decade after his father’s death.

Saul’s son by his second marriage with Alexandra (Sondra) Tsachacbasov, Adam Bellow, published a nonfiction book In Praise of Nepotism in 2003.

In 2000, when Saul was 84 years old, he had his 4rth child and first daughter, Janis Freedman.
