Mihir Sen was born on 16 November 1930 in Purulia, Municipality in West Bengal State, India. He died at the age of 66 years old. Mihir was the only man to swim the oceans of the 5 continents in one the calendar year 1966.
These included the Bosphorus, Dardanelles, Palk Strait, Gibraltar, and the entire length of the Panama Canal. This unique achievement received him a place in The Guinness Book of Records as the “World’s Greatest Long Distance Swimmer”.
He graduated with a degree in law from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Mihir wanted to travel to England to practice for the bar but was inhibited by a lack of funds.
However, with the financial help of the Biju Patnaik (Chief Minister of Odisha), in 1950 he was able to board a ship to England to go after his studies.

Mihir read an article in a newspaper about Florence Chadwick. She was the 1st American woman to swim the English Channel in 1950 and he was inspired to repeat this feat for his country India.
At this time, Mihir had barely any experience in swimming, so sought lessons at the local YMCA until he mastered the front crawl (UK / freestyle US) technique.
On 27 September 1958, Mihir catapulted to fame after conquering the English Channel from Dover (England) to Calais in the 4rth fastest time (14 hours and 45 minutes).
Mihir returned to India as a National Hero and also he was awarded the Padma Shri by Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
