On 15 November 2021, Lee McGregor’s father was rushed to hospital after being hit by a lorry on Wheatfield Road. However, his father has recovered from life-threatening injuries. Lee explained,

“I’ve had a really tough couple of weeks, to be honest, and my head has been all over the place. I’ve done some damage to my hand but I’ve tried to just train through the injury. It’s nothing too serious. I might have been able to fight but the news of my dad being run over by a lorry and then being put in intensive care fighting for his life was just too much.”

“I left Vegas as soon as I could to get home and see my dad. I actually read about the story online about someone being hit by a lorry but, at the time, I had no idea it was my dad.”

“He is going to be okay and is on the mend but it’s going to be a long, long road to recovery. He’s suffered a lot of broken bones but the main thing is he’s alive. I’m glad he is still here to be honest.”

How did Lee McGregor’s mother die?

Lee McGregor’s mother passed away after battling with throat cancer for over a year. She passed away in May 2017 when Lee won the British amateur bantamweight title. Lee’s mother lost her voice and struggled to speak. Lee explained,

“My mum had [throat] cancer for over a year but she’d got the all clear. She died on the day in May 2017 when I won the British amateur bantamweight title. The effects of cancer ended her life. She had suffered a lot and she was only 44. She had lost her voice and had to get a voice-box and she struggled to speak after that. We’d already had a big scare after she was cleared of cancer. She was choking one time on her own. She managed to phone an ambulance but she passed out before the call ended. They had enough information to know where my mum lived and so they could resuscitate her.

“We believe she was choking again the second time but she never had the chance to phone 999 on the day I fought for the British title in Cardiff. It’s so sad but I don’t think she knew I won the title that day. It must have been about two in the afternoon when I won and I think she went about the same time. My gran and grandad had been phoning her all day. They thought she must just be sleeping. But it got to the stage where they thought something’s up. My grandad drove to the house and I think he knew what he was going to find.”

After some time, Lee realized that his mother has passed away.

How old was Lee McGregor’s mother when she died?

Lee McGregor’s mother was 44 years old when she passed away.

Lee McGregor Family and  Brothers

Lee McGregor has brothers but we don’t know how many brothers he has. One of his brothers is Connor McGregor. Connor used to box. Lee McGregor said,

“I have an older brother who used to box and he used to beat me up. He was the boxer back in the day and I was the footballer. He was a really good fighter and I was at Livingston as a pro youth. It’s mad because now we’ve swapped roles – he’s playing for Lothian Thistle and I’m the boxer. And he doesn’t beat me up any more!

“So it turned out I was meant to be the boxer and he was meant to be the footballer. He’s a good player and I think he could be at a higher level. It was just that I has more discipline in terms of the training. I had that hunger as well. There is only 14 months us but it’s a big different when you’re 12 or 13. He was always heavier and stronger than me.

“He would get the better of me but there’s no quit in me. it got to the point he’d need to stop. Eventually they wouldn’t let us spar because it was getting too heated. But I can’t thank him enough. We have this great bond, he’s at every one of my fights and in the changing room with me. He keeps me right. It’s made us who we are.”

“It’s weird, there’s bee a lot of heartache in my family and I believe things happen for a reason. We lost my granddad in 2013 and not long after that my brother got knocked out in the ring, and it was horrible to see. But ever since he got knocked out the football took over and my boxing career took off- it was almost like my granddad was around to guide us. We’ve lost my mum, my other granddad and cousins, but now we are bringing babies in to the family. Things happen for a reason, to lift you from the heartache.”
