Amazon will be adapting the podcast The Horror of Dolores Roach into a half-hour series starring Justina Machado. Justina Machado will play Dolores Roach, released from prison after 16 years. She reconnects with an old friend and resorts to peculiar things in order to survive outside of prison. The Amazon series adapted from the podcast will also star Kita Updike, Alejandro Hernandez, and K. Todd Freeman. Aaron Mark wrote and directed the original podcast. He and Dara Resnik will serve as showrunners and co-executive producers for the series Horror of Dolores Roach. Gloria Calderón Kellett and Roxann Dawson will also be executive producers for the series. Dawson directed the pilot episode of the Amazon series. Aaron Mark originally developed Horror of Dolores Roach as a one-woman show, with Daphne Rubin-Vega starring in it. He later changed it to a podcast with Rubin-Vega in it.
Justina Machado Goes from Netflix to Amazon
The actor has roots in the Latino Chicago Theater Company, which helped open up doors for her early in her career. Justina Machado has credits in the series Six Feet Under, Jane the Virgin, and Queen of the South. It wasn’t until her starring role in the Netflix and Pop TV series One Day at a Time that she gained critical acclaim. The series was based around a single working mother living with her two kids and her mother. Justina Machado worked with Gloria Calderón Kellett on that series. The two will reunite for the Amazon series Horror of Dolores Roach, which started off as a podcast. Kellet was a co-showrunner on One Day at a Time.
The series Horror of Dolores Roach is described as “a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale of eat or be eaten; a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.” The podcast turned-Amazon series Horror of Dolores Roach will stream on Prime Video when it’s released.
