On Tuesday, June 21, British comedian Joe Lycett said that a viewer of the show recently called the police because of one of his pranks. The Birmingham-born man, 33, used Instagram to post an official email announcing the case was over.

Lycett noted in his article that he had to issue a statement clarifying the context of the joke that angered the person. He also assured fans that the joke will be featured for the rest of his “UK & Ireland 2022” tour. The comic does not detail the joke or any precise parts that might upset the audience.

What did Joe Lycett say about his controversial joke?

According to Lycett, a person feels offended by a joke or part of a joke. The comedian said in an Instagram post:

“So a couple of weeks ago, someone came to one of my touring shows and was offended by one of those jokes. And their completely natural response is to contact the damn police.”

Lycett went on to say how the police were “kind” about this but felt compelled to investigate due to the allegation. The Got Your Back singer said the investigation forced him to send “a statement clarifying the context of the joke to them.” The British TV personality also emphasized in the article:

“I was happy to use the phrase ‘giant donkey d*ck’ in a message sent to the investigating police.”

The joke in question is considered by the comics to be one of the best jokes he has ever written. Joe Lycett joked in his post that the joke would continue until he was jailed for his comment. His current stand-up comedy tour will run until September, with the final performance scheduled to take place in London.

Lycett’s refusal to release any details about the play during the current tour has prompted an investigation by the police. However, GQ claims that it was the event held on June 8 at Waterfront Hall in Belfast. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), according to the magazine, stated that the complaint was filed as a result of the said scheme.

According to GQ and Joe Lycett himself, the investigation is now complete. The wording on the screenshot of the official police-like email reads:

“First and foremost, thank you for your support today; It is very much appreciated. I can confirm that the police closed the case.”

Past issues involving Joe Lycett

Lycett made a controversial appearance on UK-based Channel 4 talk show Steph’s Packed Lunch last year. The presenter questioned the comic about disposable plastic bottles in one of Lycett’s Instagram photos of his garden. After a witty reply, the British celebrity left the show. At the time, many fans suspected that Steph McGovern’s mention of single-use plastic bottles on the show prompted Lycett to leave because he had previously pledged to quit using single-use plastic.

Before the aforementioned dispute, Joe Lycett officially changed his name to protest the German high-end fashion brand Hugo Boss. At the time, the company was accused of sending cease-and-desist letters to small companies and nonprofits with the word “boss” in their names. The company later addressed the situation, saying it had reached a friendly agreement with one of the businesses that banned the use of the term.
