Jennifer Beals was born on December 19, 1963, south of Chicago, Illinois, to Alfred and Jeanne Beals. The Flashdance actress grew up in a multiracial family because her father is African-American and her mother is Irish-American. Alfred, her father, is a grocer and also owns many other companies. Her mother, Jeanne, is also a former teacher. On December 6, 1974, when the actress was nine years old, her father died suddenly at the age of sixty-one.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times (via UPI), Beals claims that as a child she was “deeply aware” that she was “different”. She also describes being called “white” in Chatham, a predominantly African-American community where her parents raised her. Beals described her childhood in the area during the 1960s and early 1970s as “incredibly weird” as a white person living in the neighborhood.

She says she’s confident about her “difference”, which is sometimes so obvious that she wonders if anyone can see her. “I’m invisible,” she notes, warning everyone in the room that when society doesn’t “write your story,” an unconscious message is sent that the story is not worth sharing. However, she got the impression that she had a different purpose and that living as an undocumented person in the eyes of society was not a “terrible mistake”. Beals added in his commendation speech that individuals see their lives as a story from an early age, to which they are exposed most of the time.7
