Union workers with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) authorized a strike.
The move approved in a vote with support of 95% of the members. Negotiations with IDOT failed to reach a contract agreement, and the union’s last contract expired in July 2023. The union claims IDOT refuses to pay workers a fair wage or allow them to stay on their preferred health insurance. No strike date has been set.
IDOT officials responded with this statement after the strike authorization vote:
The safety of the traveling public always has been and always will be the Illinois Department of Transportation’s top priority. The department values its hard-working staff and employees, and looks forward to continuing a successful partnership with all of its collective bargaining units now and into the future.
