A SICKENING injury to Adam Jackson marred this dramatic Yorkshire derby.

The Barnsley centre-back clashed heads with Hull’s Jon Toral and was given oxygen during 11 minutes of treatment on the pitch — before being taken off on a stretcher.

It was a horrible collision which stirred memories of the life-threatening fractured skull suffered by Tigers ace Ryan Mason in a clash with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill 13 months ago.

Luckily, though, Barnsley were able to tweet after the match that Jackson "regained consciousness quickly" and could soon talk to medics.

This was a big showdown between two White Rose rivals desperate to dodge the drop.

They both arrived high on confidence after morale-boosting wins last time out.

Tigers stretched their unbeaten run at the KCOM to seven games by edging out play-off hopefuls Sheffield United 1-0 last Friday night.

Then, 24 hours later, the Tykes snatched a 2-0 triumph at fellow relegation battlers Birmingham to hoist themselves clear of the bottom three — a point below Hull.

City had one-time £11million record buy Abel Hernandez fit for selection after being sidelined for six months with a nagging knee injury — but boss Nigel Adkins resisted the urge to call on the hitman.

The visitors included Scotland under-21 striker Oli McBurnie in their starting eleven after a return of three goals in three starts since joining on loan from Swansea last month.

And it was no surprise that McBurnie should be the one to break the deadlock when he arrowed a near post header into the top corner of the net from Brad Potts’ 21st minute cross.

Hull were looking a shadow of the side that rocked the Blades, but Seb Larsson came agonisingly close to grabbing a leveller with a 25-yard free-kick that flew inches wide on the half-hour.

And then 13-goal top scorer Jarrod Bowen was out of luck with a fierce angled drive that was just off-target six minutes later.

But it was Barnsley who looked the more threatening side, and they almost doubled their advantage on 38 minutes when Kieffer Moore had a vicious low drive well saved by Allan McGregor.

City found another gear after the break and grabbed a deserved equaliser through inspirational skipper Michael Dawson after 72 minutes.

Dawson buried a close-range drive after the Tykes defence had failed to clear a corner.
