How to view exif metadata for photos on an iphone or ipad

If you want to get more information about a photo you took, there’s an easy way to do it on your iPhone or iPad. A free iOS app lets you quickly and easily view your photo metadata.
What Is Metadata?
Every photo you take with a cell phone or digital camera contains a ton of extra metadata embedded in the image file. Viewing this information lets you see where the photo was taken (if you have GPS enabled), what camera settings were used, the date and time the photo was captured, and the image file size and format. Most digital cameras automatically record this data unless you specifically disable it.
Metadata can be useful for finding photos from a recent vacation or looking up when your favorite sunset photo was taken. However, this data can also say a lot about your personal habits and where you live. It’s a good idea to edit or remove sensitive metadata before sharing photos online.
Currently, iOS doesn’t have a built-in feature for viewing metadata, so you’ll need to download a third-party app.
How to View Photo Metadata on Your iPhone or iPad
There are several metadata viewer apps available, but we like Photo Investigator. It’s free and easy to use, and the app developers continually update and improve it. Note that the free version only lets you view your photo metadata. To edit or remove metadata from your photos, you’ll need to update to the paid version for $2.99.
First, download the Photo Investigator app from the App Store.
Once you have the app installed, open it up and you’ll see this screen. Click the icon in the lower left corner.
You’ll see a popup asking you to give Photo Investigator permission to access your photos. Tap the “OK” button.
Once you’ve authorized the app to view your photos, you’ll see a list of all your albums. Tap an album to view its contents, and then select a photo for which you’d like to see metadata. Photos with GPS coordinates have a globe icon displayed in the upper right corner of the image.
Tap the green icons along the bottom of the photo to see each category of metadata. The “i” tab displays general information about the image, including the file size, format, and name. The globe tab shows the location the photo was taken on a map, and the clock tab shows the photo’s timestamp. The camera tab shows the camera settings used to take the picture, including shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and camera model. And the speech bubble tab shows the photo’s caption, if it has one.
To see a full list of your photo’s metadata, select Metadata > View All at the bottom of the app screen.
This screen lets you see all your metadata in one place.
You can also sort and view your photos by location. Tap the map icon at the bottom of the app home screen.
You’ll see a map of all the places you’ve been and the number of photos you’ve taken there (provided you had GPS location tagging enabled on your device). Tap a numbered bubble icon to view your photos from that region.
How to View Photo Metadata in macOS or Windows
If you don’t want to download a third-party app or prefer to view your photos on a computer, you can also view your photo metadata by importing your photos to your PC from your iPhone or Android phone. Both MacOS and Windows have metadata viewing features built in.
In iOS 15 Apple added lots of new features in the Photos app. Now you can view the EXIF data on your iPhone when you are viewing a picture. In the Photos app, there is a new information pane you can access while viewing a photo or video. This info pane contains all the EXIF metadata about the photo or video. not only that you can check the file size of the photo, from where it came in case you saved it from another app, not only that you can change the date and time of the picture or video from there. Follow the given steps to view the EXIF data on your iPhone or iPad.
Make sure you have installed iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or later on your iPhone or iPad.
How to View EXIF data of a picture in the Photos app
- Simply open up the Photos app and then tap to open a Photo in the library.
- You can swipe up the image you are viewing or just tap the information icon, here at the bottom of the image, you will notice an information icon (i).
- Now, you can see the complete EXIF information about the photos.
As you can see above in the screenshot, you can view the camera information that is used to take the picture, megapixels, resolution, file size, shutter speed, Aperture, ISO, and more.
INFO: you can change the meta information of any picture using a metadata viewer. In the Photos app, you can adjust the date and time of the picture. As you can see the Adjust option above in the last screenshot.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the EXIF data for a photo right on your iPhone Photos app, then you’re going to want to install the iOS 15 update right away.
With iOS 15, each image in the Photos app has a new “Info” button available that displays image format, the details of the camera used to capture it, and the location where it was taken.
Prior to now, there was no way to view this information directly in the Photos app on the iPhone, so you had to use either a third-party app, a Shortcut, or a different device to view it.
This interface can be used to add captions and to see the location where a photo was taken, plus there is an option to adjust metadata such as date captured.
Some photos will also have a sparkle next to the Info button, which means there’s info that you can see in Look Up mode. On a photo of a flower, for example, the Photos app is able to compare it to other flower images on the web, providing a possible identification for the flower type. In the screenshot below, this is indeed an accurate assessment of the type of flower in the image.
There’s also a new option to tap the “Live” button for any Live photo to automatically turn it a Loop, Bounce, or Long Exposure.

- Use settings to toggle between imperial and metric units to switch between Feet and meter respectively.

All photos taken by modern digital devices, by default, contain metadata including location (if enabled by the camera), date, device, software versions, file size, file name, etc. however, all these information is not normally visible on your iPhone. in this article, I will show you 2 ways to view photo Metadata on iPhone.
Metadata is a form of structuring data. As for images, it is called Exchangeable Image File Format (Exif). In order to protect your identity and privacy, it is recommended to remove metadata before posting photos online.
View and Remove Metadata on iPhone with Siri Shortcuts
As you know photo metadata is not normally available to view on your iPhone or iPad, but there are a few workarounds here. The first option would be using Siri Shortcuts. Shortcuts is the updated version of Workflow, the best automation tool on iOS.
The new Shortcuts app has many actions that you can use to create shortcuts to automate complex tasks. To view photo metadata is just one out of a million things that Shortcuts can do.
If you are not familiar with how Shortcuts works, then you can just use this shortcut Image Metadata that I just made to view or delete metadata from any image on your iPhone. Let me show you how it works.
Step 1. Download the Shortcuts app from AppStore and then I get the Image Metadata shortcut. You need to open the link in Safari.
Step 2. Open the Shortcuts app and run this shortcut.
Step 3. This shortcut will bring out all your photos and ask you to select one to view metadata.
Step 4. If you only want to view one photo’s metadata, then you can just tap Cancel to exit this shortcut. If you want to delete the metadata of this photo or you want to check another, tap OK to continue.
If you choose to delete photo metadata, this shortcut will resave the select photo without metadata and delete the original photo. During the process, the shortcut will ask for your confirmation to delete the select photo. Don’t worry, an exact same photo without metadata is saved.
This Shortcut is also available in Share Sheet, so you can select a photo from the Photos app and check the metadata from Share Sheet.
View Photo Metadata with Photo Investigator App
Another way to view photo metadata on iPhone is to use a free app from AppStore, Photo Investigator. Once you authorize the app to access all your photos, you will see a list of all your albums. Then you can select a photo from an album to view its metadata.
All the metadata are categorized. You can tap the green icons to see each category of metadata including general information, location of the photo was taken on a map, photo’s timestamp, camera settings, and photo’s caption.
You can also select Metadata > View All at the bottom to see all the metadata information.
If you only want to view the metadata, this app is quite convenient. If you need to edit or remove image metadata on your iPhone, you need to upgrade to its paid version, which is $2.99.
Transfer Photos to PC for Better Metadata Management
As you know, it is very convenient to view all metadata on a computer. To view Exif metadata on a PC, you can simply right click on the image and select Properties > Details.
Windows File Explorer also makes it easy to get rid of EXIF metadata of one or more images. You can select all the photos that you want remove metadata and right-click to select Properties > Details > Remove Properties and Personal Information.
That’s it. All you need to prepare is to transfer all photos from iPhone to PC. In order to make this process simple and smooth, you can use iPhone transfer software IOTransfer to one-click transfer all your photos to PC.

Change the date and time for Photos

To change the date and time (metadata) for a photo on iPhone or iPad, you’ll need an app. There currently isn’t a feature in Photos for adjusting these types of details.
You can find plenty of metadata editing apps on the App Store, but for a free app that’s easy to use, check out Exif Metadata. The app was developed by iDB.
Download the app and get ready to edit
Once you download the app and give it permission to access your Photos, you can open your photo with it a couple of different ways.
The first way is pretty obvious, just open the app. Tap the plus button on the main screen to locate and select your photo.
The second way is directly from the image in Photos. Open the photo, tap the Share button, and select Exif. (If you don’t see the app in your list, tap Edit Actions and turn on the toggle for Exif.)
You can view all metadata available and just tap Open in Exif Metadata to make your changes.
Change the date and time
1) With your photo open in the app, tap Edit on the top right.
2) Tap the Date or Time field at the top of the following screen.
3) Select the new date or time using the wheel at the bottom and tap Done.
4) When you finish editing the date and/or time, tap Save.
You’ll be asked if you want to delete your original photo. The edited one is automatically saved as a copy unless you disable this option in the app’s settings (top left button). If you choose Yes, you’ll need to confirm by tapping Delete.
Change photos date and time on Mac
You can change the date and time in Photos on Mac directly in the app itself. There’s no need for an additional tool.
1) Access the metadata by right-clicking the photo and selecting Get Info or if the photo is open, click the Info button in the toolbar.
2) In the small window that appears, double-click the date and time near the top.
3) A larger window displays. At the top next to Adjusted, select the exact spot you’d like to change. You can select the month, date, or year to change the date or hour, minutes, and seconds to change the time.
4) Enter the new information using the arrows to the right or type it in with your keyboard.
5) Click Adjust at the bottom to save your edits.
