How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

Finder.

If you use a Mac laptop to surf, you’ve probably noticed that lightly swiping two fingers left or right on the trackpad causes your web browser to go forward and back a page. For some, this is a great. For others, it happens accidentally more often than it happens on purpose, which can be annoying.

Swiping to go back and forward does take some getting used to, and you need to be aware that this feature exists, or you’re likely to quickly become frustrated. However, if you’ve simply no time or patience for this, then the feature can be turned off in just a few clicks.

Here on Safari, we can go back and forward with just a swipe of two fingers on the trackpad. The same is true for other browser such as Chrome and Firefox.

To turn this off or change how this feature behaves, first open the System Preferences, then click on “Trackpad”.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

There are quite a few ways to use and change the Trackpad’s behavior, and we provide a nice overview of them here. You can even use Trackpad gestures in the Finder’s preview pane.

Today we want to click on the “More Gestures” tab, then uncheck the box next to “Swipe between pages” to disable the aforementioned feature.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

Alternatively, if you like this feature but find you often activate it too often, then you can change it from two fingers to three, or you can change it to two or three fingers.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

That’s all there is to it. If you decide you do like this swipe feature and you want to restore it, simply go back into the Trackpad settings and turn it back on.

If you take the time to play around with the Trackpad settings, you’ll find a lot of cool functionality, so don’t be afraid to play around and see what best suits your personal user style. You may just find a function that really works well for you.

Žinoma, galite naudoti funkciją “Quick Look”, paryškindami failą ir paspausdami tarpinę klavišą, tačiau peržiūros sritis leidžia lengvai spragtelėti failus “Finder” be jokių kitų klavišų paspaudimų.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

2. In some versions of macOS, this gesture uses three fingers instead of four.

Immediately after upgrading to Sierra, the regular trackpad gestures that I had previously used with OS X have stopped working on my Macbook Pro. These include the 3-finger drag, 4-finger swipe up to open mission control, 4-finger swipe down to open the App Exposé, and the 4-finger swipe left/right to switch between desktops.

I have checked in the trackpad section of System Preferences, and all these gestures are enabled and should be working fine, which leads me to believe that it is a problem with macOS Sierra.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and/or found a solution for it?

(PS. Yes, I do use Better Touch Tool, but that does not provide a satisfactory solution)

I had this problem too; specifically, the 4-finger swipe to switch between full-screen apps. However, I just fixed it. I simply went to system preferences and changed it from 4-finger swipe to 3-finger swipe and it worked like normal. I then switched back to my preferred 4-finger swipe and everything now works fine. This worked for me. You can try and see if it works for you too. Apply this to the other swipe problems you’re having and see if it helps.

The 3-finger drag needs to be activated in the Accessibility > Trackpad options > Enable dragging. I’ve noticed that every time there is an update, the accessibility options are reset.

No, BTT doesn’t seem to be the root of the issue.

I disabled it etc. yet I still had the same trackpad problems.

A couple of things you can try.

1. Set up a new user and test that all gestures work as expected.

Go to System Preferences > Users and Groups and set a a new user.

Log into that new user and the default trackpad preferences are set.

Set the preferences as required and test.

Note: To swipe between desktops/fullscreen apps, the new user account will only have one desktop enabled, so you will need to enter Mission Control and add desktops in the top right corner.

If everything works as expected then,

2. Delete the trackpad preferences in your normal account and see if that resolves the issues.

Launch Finder and navigate to your user Library.

If you don’t have that normally enabled, In Finder’s menus, Select Option + Go – Library

Navigate to the folder ‘Preferences’ and look for ‘com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist’ and/or ‘com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist’

Move them both to Trash and then Reboot you Mac.

Once logged back in, you will need to reset your trackpad preferences in System Preferences and then test to see if the gestures are all working again.

On my system when I tested this, I had to toggle some of the preferences to make them work again, even though they were shown as set.

In my System Preferences, I do not see the option for 3-finger drag listed any longer. Which is too bad, because I use that all the time.

3-finger drag is set in SP > Accessibilities > Mouse & Trackpad – Trackpad options.

I haven’t seen the issue occur here.

Is it possible that there is a conflict occurring with Better Touch Tool? Has BTT issued any updates after the release of Sierra. It may be that the developer need to do some changes to the app.

What happens if you disable BTT, do you get your options working again? Note, you may have to log out and back in after disabling BTT.

Gary…An amazing drill-down…thanks, but I’m curious how this differs from the PREVIEW app. Thanks…Hal

Hal: The Preview app is a very different thing. First, it is a while app that you open files with, not something you would use to view the contents of a file without opening it at all. Second, it only works with images, PDFs and a few other things. Not videos, sound files and many other file types. Third, Preview has markup tools and ways to convert and export images.

OMG…this is an awesome tip. I use quicklook a lot but this is so much better for my purposes. Thanks, Gary, for being my Mac Guru.

Gary, when you showed how to use the … to add functions to Finder Preview I noticed that one of the options is “Create Searchable PDF.” That means Mac OS has given us an OCR engine to use with non-searchable PDFs, PDFs that are images! And it doesn’t just create a mass of text, it preserves formatting such as Bold and Underline and Center. Unless a person has Adobe products, that is huge! It is also relevant to your recent comment on OwlOCR.

Hi, this is exactly what I am used to seeing and using. Now Finder has stopped showing the preview pane. It just shows a ‘wheelie’. No answer on Apple support forum. Suggestions?

Joyce: A “wheelie?” No idea what you mean by that. What happens when you try to turn the Preview pane on or off? Have you tried a restart?

A trackpad is not a mouse. In some ways, that’s obvious—you swipe your fingers on it, rather than dragging it around. Less obvious, however, are the many gestures that make using a trackpad on your Mac faster and more fun. These gestures aren’t limited to laptop users, thanks to Apple’s Magic Trackpad 2, which brings gesturing goodness to any desktop Mac. Here’s how to put your fingers to work.

Four Fingers on the Trackpad

The four-fingers-down gestures are dramatic and an easy way to appreciate the power of trackpad gestures, so we’ll start with them.

Say you have a lot of windows open, and you want to move them all aside quickly so you can open a file on the Desktop. Place your thumb and three fingers together on your trackpad and then spread them outward. Your windows scurry to the edges of the screen. To bring the windows back, reverse the gesture, pinching your fingers in toward your palm.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

If you haven’t moved windows aside, pinching your thumb and three fingers together instead opens Launchpad, which shows icons for installed apps. Click an icon to open that app, or use the spreading four-fingered gesture to exit Launchpad.

Three Fingers on the Trackpad

Move three fingers horizontally on your trackpad and either nothing will happen, or you’ll switch to a different “desktop space.” This state of affairs is most easily seen by making an app full-screen. For instance, open Safari and click the green full-screen button at the upper left of the window. Safari takes over the entire screen, including the menu bar (to put it back, hover the pointer at the very top of the screen to see and click the green button again).

Now swipe left and right horizontally to switch in and out of the Safari space. As you make more apps full-screen, they’ll each create their own space. (If you’ve enabled Apple’s Dashboard, you may see it at the far left.)

What if you swipe vertically with three fingers? Swipe up to enter the All Windows view of Mission Control, which shows all open windows as thumbnails, plus desktop spaces in the top bar. Click any thumbnail to switch to it, or jump to any space by clicking it. You can also click the plus button at the upper right or drag any window into the top bar to create a new space. To move a space’s apps back to the current space, hover over a space on the top bar and click the close button that appears. To exit All Windows view, swipe down with three fingers.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

If you haven’t invoked All Windows view, swiping down with three fingers instead invokes App Exposé view, which displays thumbnails of all open windows in the current app. Click any one to switch to it. Swipe right or left with three fingers while in App Exposé to switch between apps.

Finally, on older MacBooks that don’t have Force Touch-capable trackpads, tap with three fingers on words to look them up, on files to preview them with Quick Look, and more. With newer MacBooks, if you have “Force Click and haptic feedback” enabled in System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click, you can instead “force click” with one finger for these features. That involves clicking on something and then pressing firmly without letting up.

Two Fingers on the Trackpad

The two-fingered gestures are easy to get your head around:

  • In Safari, swipe left on a page to go back in that tab’s page history or right to go forward.
  • Also in Safari, tap two fingers on the trackpad to zoom in on the content. Another two-fingered tap zooms back out.
  • In Photos, and some graphics apps, zoom in and out by pinching with two fingers, and rotate selected objects by putting two fingers on the trackpad and turning them. A two-finger pinch also zooms the page in Safari.
  • To open Notification Center quickly, swipe left from off the right-hand edge of your trackpad. Swipe back to the right to close Notification Center.

Changing Your Preferences

If you need a refresher on all these gestures, open System Preferences > Trackpad. Look in the Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, and More Gestures panes to see a video for each gesture. You can also adjust which ones are active and how many fingers they require.

With so many gestures on offer, it’s worth your time to explore everything you can do with your trackpad.

Social Media: Did you know that you can make your Mac dance (well, not literally) with two-, three-, and four-fingered gestures on the trackpad? Read on to learn more.

Swipe gesture feature in PC and mobile devices has garnered a lot of popularity nowadays. Initially, it was Apple who launched this feature successfully in its Macbooks. The smooth trackpads, the Magic Trackpad are the ones that have made it to the success list. But now, Apple is not the only company deploying this feature. Microsoft has also introduced this in Windows PCs. The swipe gesture has been included in Windows 10 and the version presets the Swipe gestures. Windows 10 natively supports precision touchpads and two, three, and four finger swipe gestures.

The swipe gesture can perform a plethora of functions. It can switch between apps and virtual desktops, minimize all windows, go to taskview mode, and more. The three finger swipe to go back and forward in your browser is not currently available in Windows 10. But it’s possible to activate the three finger gestures. It’s incredibly easy to configure three finger swipe for browser navigation.

Steps to Configure Three Finger Swipe For Browser Navigation In Windows 10

1. The first thing you need to confirm is that your machine supports precision touchpad. So open Start menu, go to Settings and click on Devices. Now click on Touchpad tab. If your computer supports precision Touchpad, you will see the message ‘Your PC has a precision touchpad’ in the right pane. But in case no such message appears and there is not many options under the Touchpad option, then your PC has an ordinary touchpad.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

One thing you must remember is that the gesture works only if your browser has a keyboard shortcut for going back and forward. If you have multiple browsers installed and they all use the same keyboard shortcut to go back and forward, this gesture will work on all of them. If your browser has a unique keyboard shortcut for going back or forward, this gesture will be limited to working in only that browser. Changing the configuration of the gesture will remove its system wide function and limit it to working only in your browser.

2. To enable three finger swipe for browser navigation, open the Settings. Now go to the Devices group of settings and select the ‘Touchpad’ tab. In the right pane, you will find an option ‘Advanced gesture configuration’. Click on it.

How to use trackpad gestures in finder’s preview pane

3.Advanced gesture configuration screen opens. You can customize three and four finger gestures. You will find the menu ‘Configure your three finger gestures’ section. Now find out the ‘Left’ option.

Click on the drop down box beside the Left option. By default it is set to ‘Switch apps’. Open the dropdown and select the option ‘Custom’. Now you will get an option to record a keyboard shortcut. This shortcut is mapped to the three finger left swipe gesture. Click on the ‘Start recording’ button. Type your browser’s keyboard shortcut for going back. Repeat the same step for the ‘Right’ gesture as well.

Now let’s see how to reverse the Swipe gestures. You can also reset the Swipe gestures. If you want to revert back to the original settings or if you have simply messed up with the feature settings while experimenting, then you can easily reset the Swipe gestures settings. To reset it, scroll down the Touchpad’ tab and find out the ‘Reset’ option. Click on it to reset all swipe gestures to default. If you change what the three finger left and right swipe gestures, then the change will affect through out the system. It’s important to know that the three finger up and down swipe, as well as the three finger tap gestures will continue to work like they always do.
