Lesson 12: Adding Transitions and Animations
Adding transitions and animations
Presentations don’t have to be a series of static slides. You can add animations to objects on slides or transitions to entire slides. A transition can be as simple as fading to the next slide, or it can be a more flashy effect. Any object can be animated, making it move or fade in or out of the slide. Google Slides makes it easy to apply these effects to some or all of your slides, adding emphasis or polish to your presentation.
Watch the video below to learn how to add transitions.
Google Slides has one pane to manage all of your transitions and animations. The Motion pane will allow you to configure the transition and all animations for the current slide.
Transitions and animations are best used in moderation. Adding too many of these effects can make your presentation look a little silly and can even be distracting to your audience. Consider using mostly subtle transitions and animations—or not using them at all.
To add a transition:
- Select the desired slide, then click the Transition command on the toolbar.
To add an animation:
- Right-click the desired object, then select Animate.
If the Motion pane is already open and you want to add more animations, you can select an object and click Add animation. You can also add multiple animations to one object.
Watch the video below to learn more about using animations.
Animation options
By default, an effect starts playing when you click the mouse during a slide show. If you have multiple effects, you will need to click multiple times to start each effect individually. However, by changing the start option for each effect, you can have effects that automatically play after the previous effect or with the previous effect.
If the object is a placeholder or text box, the By paragraph check box will be displayed. It determines if the animation is applied to the entire box or if it animates each paragraph of text in the box one at a time.
You can also adjust the speed of the animation by dragging the animation speed slider.
In the main lesson, you built a digital thank-you card to show appreciation for someone.
In this extension, you will add animation to the text on your slides and add transitions between slides.
Effects like animations and transitions add movement to your slides. They engage your audience and help you share your message in different ways.
If you published your presentation to the web, unpublish it now to make changes.
You can publish it again later.
To start, choose a part of your presentation to animate by clicking on it. Animation helps draw attention to a specific element. You can animate any element in your presentation, such as text, images, or shapes.
Choose from the list of animation effects. Decide how you want your animation to function and when you want it to move.
Test different animations in present mode until you find the one that works best for your presentation.
Adjust the speed of the animation until you are happy with the effect.
Continue adding animations to your slides. You can also insert an object or image to animate.
Next, animate the closing message of your presentation in a way that will leave a lasting impression on your audience.
Finally, choose a transition. A transition is a visual effect that occurs when slides advance.
Transitions can help your digital presentation flow and keep your audience interested.
Apply the same transition to all your slides, or choose different transitions for different parts of your presentation.
Preview the slide.
You can also preview how the transitions look throughout your entire presentation in present mode.
While using transitions adds movement and interest to your digital thank-you card, too many different transition types can be distracting and draw your audience’s attention away from your message. Test your card in present mode and remove any unnecessary animations or transitions before you publish or share your card.
Now, it’s your turn: Animate the images and text on your slides, then Adjust the effects and the speed of the animations, and Choose transitions to appear between slides.
There are many and varied ways of captivating your audience with your presentation. One of them is using visually appealing materials so people cannot take their eyes off the slides. In fact, a clever use of GIFs and other images will help you when defining concepts in a cool and modern way. In this post we’ll teach you how to add GIFs to Google Slides themes easily.
Adding a GIF from your computer
Adding a GIF image from your computer is an easy task. Let’s explore how to do it. But first, as we are going to use some Illustrations by Freepik, you can read this tutorial about how to edit, add and download Stories illustrations!
Searching, editing and downloading a Stories illustration
- Open your Google Slides theme.
- If you want to insert a GIF or change a default one, you can do so.
- Go to the left corner and, in the toolbar, click on Insert, select Image → Upload from computer.
- Choose the GIF you’d like to embed and click Open.
- Move the image if needed in order to adapt it to the design and layout of your slide.
- If you want to resize it, click on the GIF image and the outline appears. Click on any of the blue squares and drag it while you press Shift. This is helpful to keep the image proportioned!
Adding and resizing the image
Inserting a GIF Using URLs
You may prefer using GIFs online instead of downloading them. No problem! Google Slides also gives you the possibility of adding an image by URLs. The process is very much like the previous one.
- Search for the GIF you would like to add.
- Click on it → Right click → Copy Image address. For instance, we are going to use some Stories illustrations by Freepik here.
- Open your Google Slides theme.
- In Insert, select Image → By URLs.
- Paste the link (Ctrl V or Cmd V in Mac).
- Move the image if needed.
- If you want to resize it, place click on the GIF image and the outline appears. Click on any of the blue squares and drag it, but don’t forget to keep Shift pressed!

Editing a GIF in Google Slides
Google Slides provides a series of tools to change the style of your GIF: you can modify its color, transparency, add animations and so on. Let’s have a look at them.
- Select Format options.
- Select Recolor to change the hue of the GIF.
- Click on the drop-down menu and choose any of the available options.
Recolor
- Click now on Adjustments. It displays a series of options that you can customize, namely three: Transparency, Brightness and Contrast. You can adjust them using the sliding bars.
- If you are not happy with the results, click on Reset to undo the previous changes.
Adding effects and resetting them
Those are not the only effects that you can apply to GIFs. If it is in consonance with the design of the template, you can also add a drop shadow under it:
- Click on Drop shadow.
- Choose a color.
- Change its Transparency, Angle, Distance and Blur radius if needed using the three different sliding bars.
- To delete the shadow that you have just created, unselect the Drop shadow button.
Drop shadow
- If you want to apply a reflection effect to the GIF, Google Slides includes this option. Click on the Reflection dropdown menu.
- Regulate its Transparency, Distance and Size to tailor it to your needs. For this example, we are only going to show you the features, we are not going to apply any reflection.
Adding Reflection
To catch your listeners’ attention, you have the possibility of animating the embedded GIF. You can have a look at our How to Add Animations and Transitions in Google Slides, although we will give here a GIF with the main animation and transition features:
Adding and deleting animations
Pro Tip: It’s not recommended to add too many effects to your GIFs, as they may crash or look unprofessional.
Finding the perfect GIF can be easy! Stories by Freepik is a new project that offers illustrated concepts that can help you reinforce your messages in a visual way.
You can create your own story with several characters, animate them, change their color and the elements in the background. If you want to know more about how to create these awesome illustrations, read about Stories by Freepik: Awesome illustrations for creative presentations:
They are completely free, 100% editable and you can export them as .gif or video files. Create and download as many as needed!

To put it simple, up to now, it’s impossible to make looping animations in Slides, even no chances with 3rd party applications. 🙁 I admit Google Slides is a lean solution for presentations.
Loop Animation via a Hack
But there is a workaround (I like workarounds). It’s simple: make a list of same animations for the same object. For instance, I want to spin endlessly for the rectangle below. Here are the steps,
- Create an object on your slide. An object can be a Shape, a Text box, or an Image etc.
- Click Insert > Animation. It brings up a right side panel Transitions in Slides.
- Select the object you created.
- Create a start Spin animation. Click + Add animation in the Transitions panel. Select Spin from the drop down list. And select On click. This initiates your animation when you click the object.
- Create 2nd Spin animation. Click + Add animation again. Select Spin from the drop down animation list. This time, select After previous.
- Repeat the step 5, and create another N same animations. It ensures the animation runs continuously.
- Click Play.
- Click the object you created.
- You will see the spinning rectangle.
Google Slides Loop Animation
Animation via GIF
An alternative to insert an endless animation is to insert a GIF. Slides supports GIF natively and most GIF online will loop infinitely. Inserting a GIF is no different from an image. It’s in menu Insert > Image > Upload from computer.
A fast way to express your idea is to search existing animations made by others. A popular GIF site is giphy.com.
To create your own GIF, screen record your non-loop animation and create a loop GIF via numerous third party GIF Maker tools. This will cost you more time if you are new to it.
Happy bouncing 🙂

Creating a powerful and compelling visual presentation is a real art. Today, it’s not that easy to impress a sophisticated audience. If you want to know how to make your slides more entertaining and captivating for people, keep reading this article. Below we will introduce you to Google slides design, will explain why you need to incorporate animation in your presentation and how to effectively do this. Let’s get started!
What Is It?
Coming up with a compelling keynote and appealing deck of slides is a must if you want your presentation to be successful. It’s pretty challenging to keep the audience engaged and interested in a certain topic, so slide animation is something that will enhance your speech and draw people’s attention.
In fact, it can be applied for slides, text, images, and other elements to show smooth movement between different parts and elements that you include in the deck of slides. Animation and transition like fading/dissolving/flying can easily jazz up your presentation and make it compelling for the public. The main thing to remember is not to overtry with visual effects; otherwise, people will only get overwhelmed and distracted.
Reasons you should give it a try and incorporate animations are immense. First of all, it will help you create strong visual slides as well as raise the public’s interest in a certain topic. People love visual elements, so make sure you do all your best to add extra visual effects in your next presentation. It’s crucial so that everything is consistent and used in moderation. Our job is to show you how you can do this.
Guide on How to Generate Google Slide Animation
Look at some more detailed tips that will help you effectively add animations to your presentation. By implementing these tricks, you will create an amazing impression and achieve better results not just with an engaging keynote but with stunning visual effects.
Know How to Add Animations
You can add animations to any element or object in your presentation. Animations are pretty easy to create, so most likely, you won’t have any problem with the process. However, here is a brief guide that will help you create it in just a few clicks.
First of all, we will tell you how to create transitions between slides. It will allow your slides to appear and disappear slowly and smoothly as you are moving through a speech. Choose Slide on a top bar and go to the transitions folder. You will get access to various visual effect types to pick from. Take your time to get familiar with all of them and pick the one that suits your purpose the most.
The next step is to pick the proper duration for each transition. You can make it slow, medium, or fast. No matter what you choose, make sure it looks appropriate and well on a screen. Play all the effects before saving, so you can see how it is going to look at the presentation. Once you are satisfied with the final results, you can apply a certain transition to the deck of slides.
Now, we can move on to adding animations to text and images in your deck of slides. The process of creating visual effects is also pretty simple and straightforward. Even a person with minimum technical skills can do this within minutes, and it can be used if you want to emphasize a certain object you have included in a slide.
It’s required to select an image or a piece of text that you want to apply visual effects to. Then you should go to Insert and choose the option of adding animation. You will be able to see all the animation options available and pick the one you would like to apply. After this, you can choose when the effect should begin as well as to adjust the duration in the same way you did it for transitions.
You can repeat the same step flow for every element that you want to improve with effects, then play to see how it all works and save the settings. Once you have created all transitions and animations, you should see how the presentation has changed. You will see that it looks so much better and more eye-catching.
Stay Consistent
The main rule for creating an effective and eye-catching presentation and keynote is consistency. While creating the overall design, you probably stick with a certain design, colors, and fonts that reflect your company vision and style. The same is required while creating your animations.
The options are numerous, but you have to choose 2-3 effect types that you will use throughout the presentation. It will make slides look more professional and polished but don’t overuse them not to look childish and pick it wisely.
Choose Proper Timing
Another important step will be to time each animation according to a presenter’s speech. It’s important to let the audience stay on the same page and be more involved in the presentation and interact with the deck of slides more meaningfully. You can adjust the timing for each slide separately in the settings. Rehearse a few times to ensure that everything runs smoothly to offer the public an impeccable experience during the real presentation.
Automate Everything
Automating your transitions and animations is also necessary so you can focus on presenting your keynote and interacting with the audience instead of turning on these effects. They can automatically start after a previous one, so you will have nothing to worry about. This is a final touch that will help you create a perfectly crafted quality presentation that will certainly impress the public.
Final Words
We have proved Google slide animations enable you to improve your deck of slides, create a stronger positive impression as well as keep the audience engaged and interested in your keynote. It’s pretty easy to implement such effects in your future presentation, so feel free to use the tips provided in this article. By adjusting your deck of slides, you will certainly achieve success no matter what the purpose of your verbal and visual presentation.
How can you bring your Google Slides presentation to life and engross your audience further? The answer is simple: animation! When used well, animation is a great tool, helping to capture your audience’s attention and consequently strengthening your message. Though Google Slides animation features aren’t incredibly wide ranging, we’re going to show you how to make the most of what’s there to work with.
Animation can build up processes step by step, keeping the audience connected throughout. It can compare before and afters and also show movement. That’s why animation – when used to communicate meaning – is so important. You wouldn’t want to pose a question and reveal the answer at the same time. It is crucial to time these elements to the presenter’s talk track, allowing the audience to interact with information in a more meaningful way.
With Google Slides animation can be applied to text, shapes, objects, and slides. Sometimes a simple transition or fade in can make a world of difference – allowing you to pace the flow of information or communicate processes and changes more effectively. It is also important to remember to not overpower your message with too many animations, make sure they are consistent and keep it to a minimum. Remember less is more.
If you’re looking for ways to enhance your Google Slides presentation and have been following our blog posts, you will know that compelling visuals are the most effective way to inform and persuade your audience. If you are new to our philosophy, here is a great place to start. To access Google Slides, click here.
We’re going to explain how to add animation to Google Slides and show you five ways to make the most of its animation features. Now, let’s get to it!
Google Slides Transitions
Transitions are animations added in between slides to help move smoothly between different pieces of content. Just like in PowerPoint, Google Slides allows you to add animations when you transition from one slide to another. Unlike in PowerPoint, these transitions are stored alongside the animations.
How to add a transition: Open a presentation in Google Slides. Click the slide you want to add a transition to. Then click Insert > Animation. Select a transition from the scroll down. If you want to apply the transition to every slide, just click on the Apply to all slides button.
If you change your mind and decide you want to remove the transition, here is how you do it: Go to Insert on the menu, then scroll down to Animation. The animation pane will open on the right of the slide. Click Transition and then No transition.
With this in mind, let’s look at two ways you can use transitions in Google Slides.
1. Dissolve
As seen on the slide below, a Dissolve transition in between slides gives your presentation better flow and to allow your audience a second to breathe and take the information in, before moving on to the next topic.
2. Slide from the left
You can also transition from slide to slide using a Slide from the left transition. In the example below we present important stats – by using the transition we can move along as if using the motion path animation found in PowerPoint. It’s a simple and effective way of showing progression.
Google Slides Animations
Right, now that we’ve covered transitions, let’s talk about the more traditional animations in Google Slides. These apply to individual shapes, text, or objects on the slide.
How to add an animation: Open a presentation in Google Slides. Click the text or image you want to animate. Then click Insert > Animation. Click on Select an object to animate, scroll down and choose the animation you want to use. Then on the scroll underneath select whether you want your object to animate On click, After previous or With previous.
There’s three animation features that we really like to use, and we’ll show you how to use them.
3. Fly in from Left to Right
This Google Slides animation allows you to bring in objects or text boxes one by one, automatically or with clicks. By setting objects to animate on clicks, you can to reveal each object as you discuss it, maintaining your audience’s focus on the topic. Without animations to pace the flow, your audience will likely read all of the content in one go, ignoring what you’re saying as the presenter and reaching the conclusion ahead of time.
4. Fade in
Fade in is a very popular Google Slides animation as it can serve many different purposes. By bringing objects in with a fade, you can direct the audience’s attention to the item being discussed and you avoid overwhelming them with too many visuals all at once. It is very effective with bullet points, process items, or any shapes you want to present in a particular order.
In the example below we show the background photo of the Christ the Redeemer. It is both a beautiful and a relevant landscape that will engage the audience, in this case the travel industry. Having it take up the entire slide is an effective way to draw the audience in. After setting the scene we can then fade in the text content for the presenter to discuss.
5. Fly in from bottom
This Google Slides animation is very useful if your presentation includes technical information, as it allows you to break up the data with eye catching motions, particularly in graphs. In our example below, we used it to add some movement to our chart, bringing one value at a time, helping the audience study the numbers one at a time. We’ve also used a white rectangle to mask the fly in below the X axis. For a tutorial of how to do that, check out our guide to animating with masks: it focuses on PowerPoint but the principle of masking and animation on a graph are identical in Google Slides.
So those are our five ways to use animation in Google Slides: two awesome transitions, and three useful animations! As you can see, it’s not difficult to use the Google Slides animation features to make your presentation more compelling and engaging. Be sure to consider the purpose and timing of your animations: use them to pace the flow of information and keep your audience following your narrative. Now that you know how to add animation to Google Slides and have seen some creative animation ideas, go and get started! If you are new to Google Slides and want to learn more about how to use the tool from scratch, here is our ultimate guide.
Make Google Slides Transition Automatically
Instructions
1. Customize transitions for each slide
Enable your slides to advance automatically. Moreover, you can create some really fun and unique transitions as a first step.
2. Choose auto-advance slides (web-only)
Choose the option to Auto-Advance Slides. It allows you to set the timing to play between slides. However, it only works if you are presenting over the Web.
3. Demo
You can share the presentation URL. Or embed it into your website.
Presentation programs have come a long way since their invention in 1981. In the early days, these programs used slide projectors to show presentation slides.
Later in the 1990s, LCD screens became commonplace. Microsoft’s PowerPoint presentation program became a standard feature in all new computers, including Mac and PC (Windows).
Google Slides, meanwhile, is a relatively new solution offered by Google. It was first released in 2006 as part of the Google Drive package.
This allows users with Google accounts to easily create, edit and share presentations online. Users are also able to collaborate with one another in real-time, minimizing the need for lengthy file transfers.
One exciting set of functions within the Google Slides program is the Animations and Transitions. This set of functions allows you to customize the type of animation and transition you get between slides. Needless to say, automatic slide transitions are a major part of this functionality.
How to Make Slides Advance Automatically in Google Slides?
Making slide transitions in Google Slides is easy. There are two main processes for adding slide transitions.
If you have not done it before, see the walkthroughs below and you will be able to learn it quickly!
1. Customizing Transitions for Each Slide
This process will not enable your slides to advance automatically. However, you can create some really fun and unique transitions as a first step!
- First, create your slides in Google Slides
Start a new presentation slide
- Next, select the first slide
- Click the tab labeled Slide at the top, then Change transition.
Select Transition in Google Slides
A column will appear to the right side of your screen.
- Under the dropdown menu that says No transition, click to open the other options
You should see a list of transition types, including Fade, Slide from Right, Slide from Left, Flip, Cube, and Gallery.
Choose your Transition mode
- Select your preferred transition type
You should now see a slider with the speed settings: Slow, Medium, and Fast. Drag the slider to your preferred speed setting.
Adjust the speed setting
* Notice the button “Apply to all slides”? Click this button if you wish to have the same transition for all your slides.
If you want to have different transition types for different slides, simply repeat the process with each slide. Right-click on one slide at a time to edit its transition type. Just take care not to click “Apply to all slides” by mistake!
2. Choosing “Auto-Advance Slides” (Web Presentations Only)
This process entails choosing the option to Auto-Advance Slides. It allows you to set the timing to play between slides. However, it only works if you are presenting over the Web.
- First, click on the File menu
- Select Publish to the web, then Auto-advance slides
Publish to the web
Choose the timing for the pause in between slides. Also, remember to select the option Starting the slideshow as soon as the player loads for auto-start. If you want the slideshow to loop, be sure to check the option Restart the slideshow after the last slide.
The published pop-up
- Click on publish
You will see a link for sharing this presentation. You could also click on the “Embed” tab if you wish to copy the presentation’s custom HTML code to a website.
Link for sharing
When you open the presentation’s link, make sure to press the “Play” button so that the slides will move automatically.
That’s it for automatic slide transitions – as you can see, Google Slides is a really user-friendly program!
Adding automatic slide transitions is not a difficult task at all. All it takes is for you to practice and become familiar with the process. Also, if you wish to appear more professional, consider getting a laser pointer that is compatible with Google Slides.
