Our top picks for survival games on Xbox One and Series X|S
There are a wealth of survival games on Xbox One, with gameplay that revolves around hunger, thirst, and oftentimes, finding shelter (or even building your own). These uniquely challenging games are plentiful on Xbox, and here are our favorites.
It was recently announced that Microsoft is updating the Xbox App to allow users to stream console games to Windows 10 computers, which is great news for gamers who don’t like to be tied to one device or location.
In fact, there are two different ways to enjoy Xbox titles away from the console: you can stream them directly from your home console using a network connection or you can utilize cloud gaming on supported devices.
You’ll need to be a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member to use the Xbox Cloud Streaming, but no membership is required for Remote Play. The feature is still being rolled out for Windows 10 devices so only 22 countries currently have access. Thankfully you can enjoy using it with not just the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles, but also older Xbox One consoles.
There are a few things you’ll need to make this work, such as a compatible controller and a decent network connection, but if you have those boxes ticked then there’s nothing stopping you from connecting your old laptop to the service and streaming games outside on a nice day, or chilling out in another room if someone wants to commandeer the family TV.
Microsoft stated alongside the announcement: “This marks the first time we’ve enabled Xbox Remote Play on PC for Xbox Series X|S owners. We’ve also made additional upgrades from previous iterations of Remote Play, such as general stability updates, allowing for games to stream at 1080p up to 60fps, and adding the ability to play select Xbox 360 and Xbox Original games, which has been one of the most highly-requested features.”
Hardware and network requirements
According the Microsoft’s Remote Play webpage, you’ll need the following to use the service:
- An Xbox Series X / S / One console (game streaming must be enabled in Settings)
- A Windows 10 PC with at least 2GB of RAM and 1.5 GHz CPU or faster
- Compatible Xbox Controller (mouse and keyboard and touch are currently not supported for remote play gaming)
- The Xbox app for PC
- A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile
- An internet connection of at least 7-10 Mbps. Wired is preferred, but wireless is also achievable for both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz with varying results
Unlike PlayStation 4’s Remote Play and PS Now, Microsoft’s streaming feature requires your Xbox console and PC to be on the same network, so you won’t be able to crack your laptop out at work and stream games from the Xbox Series X you have sitting at home.
It’s also likely that you already have the Xbox app installed on your Windows 10 PC or laptop if it’s a recently released product, but make sure you’re signed on with the same Microsoft account that you use for your console.
How to stream games from your Xbox to your Windows PC
Set up remote play on your console:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features
- Select the Enable remote features checkbox
- Under Power mode, select Instant-on
Now set up remote play on your Windows 10 desktop PC or laptop:
- Open the Xbox app for PC
- Press the Consoles icon next to the search box
- Select the console you want to connect to
Microsoft also advises the following for the best possible Remote Play experience:
- It’s a good idea to save frequently while playing remotely. If you get disconnected from your console, you could lose progress in your game
- If you close the app or do something else on your phone after starting your remote play session, you won’t immediately lose your progress. After a period of time, your console will turn off and go to sleep. You can reconnect your session until the console turns off
- Only one person at a time can play remotely, even if others are set up to connect remotely or locally
- Microsoft Store and in-game purchases, and backward compatibility are disabled during remote play with the Xbox mobile apps
- Currently, external applications on your console like Edge and Hulu are blocked while using remote play
If you’re looking to access cloud gaming then open the Xbox App, click the “cloud gaming” button, and select from any of the available games in your Xbox Game Pass library. You’ll need to be an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member to access cloud gaming, however.
For games located on your home console, you’ll find that your device mirrors the homepage of your Xbox when you’ve linked to two devices so you can jump right back into your last played titles or head into your available library.
An official Xbox Wireless Controller is recommended, and we have a guide on how to connect your Xbox Series X controller to your PC, and for older hardware, we also go through how to connect your Xbox One controller. You should also be able to use a wired controller as Windows 10 shouldn’t have any issues recognizing official Microsoft hardware but we’re unable to test this ourselves as we don’t have a wired controller to hand.

There’s no need to stop gaming when someone else needs the TV. You can continue playing Xbox One games right from your Windows 10 computer. Here’s what you need to know.
Windows 10 has arrived with a handful of new features. Microsoft added the Cortana voice assistant to the desktop, a new Web browser, and we can’t forget about the return of the Start button. One of the coolest features, however, has to be Xbox One game streaming. This is built directly into the operating system and allows any PC running Windows 10 to stream games from their Xbox One console.
Here’s how to set it up:
Step 1: Launch the Xbox app. This is preinstalled on your computer with Windows 10 and can be found by typing “Xbox” in the search field next to the Start button.
Step 2: Sign in with your Xbox account and click the “Let’s Play” button.
Step 3: Turn on your Xbox One and make sure it is connected to the same network as your computer. You can check the network on the Xbox One by going to Settings, followed by Network. You will also want to make sure that game streaming is enabled. This can be found in the Preferences section of the Settings menu.
Step 4: Select the “Connect” option from the left side bar of the Xbox app. Your Xbox should appear on the screen. If it doesn’t, click enter the console’s IP address. You can find the IP address for your Xbox One by going to Settings, clicking on Network, followed by Advanced settings.
Step 5: Plug the Xbox One controller into the computer, select Stream, and begin gaming.
A recent update to Xbox app has also added a new “very high quality” streaming mode. You can change the quality of your stream in the Xbox app on Windows 10 by going to Settings, followed by Game Streaming. The “very high” option will require a fairly high-end router and wireless network. If you experience choppy gameplay, lower the quality of the stream to high, medium, or low.

There are loads of reasons to like Windows 10 and here is one of them. Although, Xbox itself is a great gaming console, which comes with the controller that helps users to play any available game as per your wish.
Microsoft’s most awesome operating system is going to launch very soon and they have already tried tons of new features. As a result, Microsoft had to add and remove so many things. At the same time, if you are a die-hard gamer, I am sure that you have tried Xbox One to play some strategic, racing and outdoor type of games.
Xbox is probably the best console to play games without having any hanging and other system error. The most beautiful thing is this is very easy to connect the Xbox controller with PC using the Micro USB data cable.
However, if you check this method minutely, you will notice that you can play the game on your PC using Xbox controller as long as you are in front of your PC. This is because USB data cable doesn’t come with a long wire. Hence, you will face problems because of the length of data cable wire.
Nevertheless, Windows 10 has solved this problem. With Windows 10, this is possible to stream any Xbox game to the PC without having any problem. That means, no matter whether you are in your couch or in the roof of your apartment, you would be able to play your game as long as you are connected with same network.

Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles and Windows 10 PCs play pretty well together. So well, in fact, that you can stream Xbox One games onto your PC.
Why would you want to do this? Perhaps because you prefer your monitor to your TV. Or maybe your Xbox One is on the other side of the house, and you just want to wirelessly stream to your PC instead of buying a 50-foot HDMI cable to physically link the two together.
How to use Xbox Game Pass on your Windows 10 PC
There is a catch: unlike PlayStation 4’s Remote Play and PS Now, two features that let you stream from anywhere, the Xbox One console and PC need to be on the same network. Still, it’s a pretty cool trick. There are only a few simple steps that you need to get through in order to get your console’s feed sent to your PC.
Use the Xbox Console Companion app
- If you have a Windows 10 desktop or laptop, it likely already has the Xbox Console Companion app installed. (This was formerly known as the Xbox app; Microsoft is in the process of transforming it into a more fleshed-out gaming dashboard). You can download the app from the Microsoft Store if it’s not already on your PC.
- Open the app, then sign into your Microsoft account (which is also your Xbox account) when it prompts you to do so.
- Once you’re signed in, click the menu button at the top left-hand side of the Xbox Console Companion app window. It will open a list of items. Click “Connection” near the bottom of that list.
- Click “Add a device” in the top-middle section of the app window. The app will search for an Xbox One console in your network. Click “Connect” once you find your console.
- If your console doesn’t show up, enter its IP address in the appropriate field. Your Xbox One’s IP address can be found by opening up the settings menu on the console, then clicking “Network” > “Network settings” > “Advanced Settings.”
- After you’re connected, your console will show up under the “Now Playing” section in the Xbox Console Companion app. Click it and your PC monitor will show a direct feed from your Xbox One.
Fix lag on a wireless network
As you play on your PC, there may be some lag depending on your Wi-Fi network speeds. One way to speed up a choppy stream is to use Ethernet instead, if that’s an option. You can also use the Xbox Console Companion app to tweak the fidelity of the stream, resulting in a faster-moving picture, although at the expense of image quality.
- To access the drop-down menu, hit the menu button on the top-right part of the display, near the full-screen button.
- If you want to look at the granular details of the stream, like bit rate, bandwidth use, and more, click the button that appears near the bottom left part of the screen.
I don’t use the Xbox Console Companion app on my PC too often, but it comes in handy when I want to play Xbox at the same time that others prefer to watch something else on the TV. It’s particularly useful for slow-paced games where the speed of your inputs doesn’t come into play, but I found it to be sufficient for games like Asura’s Wrath, which relies on quickly completing events to make progress.

One of the coolest gaming features packed into Windows 10 is the Xbox app. It lets you remotely access your Xbox One console and stream games to a Windows 10 PC. This comes in handy when everyone is watching a boring movie on the living room TV where your Xbox One is connected, but you’d rather play Metro Exodus or Tom Clancy’s The Division 2.
So how does it work? In this guide we show you how to stream the Xbox One to Windows 10.
With Microsoft’s method, you absolutely cannot “officially” stream your Xbox One console over the internet like the PlayStation 4. As we’ve seen with Sony’s console, playing across the internet can produce quality and latency issues, sometimes to the point where streaming just isn’t worth the effort. This is why Steam and Microsoft chose to lock game streaming to your local network.
However, there is a method to stream the Xbox One to a Windows 10 PC across the internet, but it requires knowing how to access your router’s control panel and how to edit the settings. We provide those instructions at the end.
Use Ethernet or Wireless AC
For the best results, stream the Xbox One across your local network using a wired Ethernet connection. Of course, not everyone wants Ethernet cables strung across the house, as it’s visually ugly, even when draped along the walls and corners. The plus side with all these cables is that you won’t see the performance dips associated with wireless connectivity.
If Ethernet isn’t an option, fall back on a Wireless AC 5GHz access point. A mesh network is good due to the way it creates a blanket of connectivity versus the standard router that broadcasts from one point like a radio tower. A Wireless N 5GHz connection works as well, but you’ll see limited performance using a 2.4GHz connection on either network.
Microsoft also suggests using Powerline adapters as an alternative to wired connections. You need at least two units that plug directly into your wall’s power outlets to create a network connection through the electrical system. One unit can then plug into your modem or router via an Ethernet cable while the other unit plugs into the Ethernet port on the Xbox One. Unfortunately, Powerline technology heavily depends on your home’s wiring and breaker box, thus you may see better results using wireless connectivity instead.
Finally, you can plug an Xbox One controller into your Windows 10 PC to play games remotely. You can also plug a headset into your Windows 10 PC and communicate as usual with your Xbox One friends.
Let’s begin our guide on how to stream the Xbox One to Windows 10!
Xbox One
1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
2. Scroll right to highlight the “gear” icon and access the System panel.
3. Choose Settings as shown above.
You’re done on the console side. Now let’s move on to Windows 10.
Windows 10
1. If you don’t have the Xbox app already installed on your PC, head here.
2. After installation, sign in to your Xbox Live account.
3. Select the console icon on the left menu labeled Connection as shown above.
Now that you’re linked, the Xbox app Connection panel should show a Now Playing screen. You’ll also see options for initiating the stream, testing the stream, and turn on the Xbox One. The More link opens a menu to disconnect the console, connect automatically, turn off the console, and forget the console.
You can easily change the quality of the Xbox One stream if the resolution is too low, or if the resolution is too high and causing network issues. Within the Xbox app, perform the following:
1. Click on the “gear” icon located on the left-hand menu. This opens the Settings panel.
2. Click on the Xbox One category.
3. Next to Video encoding level, select Very high, High, Medium, or Low.
With your Xbox One console streaming to your Windows 10 PC on the local network, you can alter a few settings to access the console remotely from across the internet. This will require knowing how to edit settings in your modem or router.
Play from anywhere across the internet
1. If you haven’t already, follow the previous setup instructions for the Xbox One and Windows 10. Make sure this connection works correctly before moving forward.
2. Go into your router and assign a “static” IP address to your Xbox One console. This method varies by manufacturer.
3. Locate the port forwarding panel in your router and reserve the three ports listed below. Make sure the forward-to address is the same static IP address you assigned to the Xbox One. Use your console’s name as the rule description if needed. Here are the ports:
- 4838 (TCP and UDP)
- 5050 (TCP and UDP)
- 4900 – 6500 (TCP and UDP)
4. Locate your home’s external IP address. You can typically find this in the router, but you can also type What is my IP in Google’s search field to discover your public IP address.
5. Pull your Windows 10 PC off the network currently used by your Xbox One.
6. Open the Xbox app.
7. Click on the Connection icon on the left-hand menu.
8. Click Add a device.
9. Enter your home’s IP address in the field as shown above.
10. Click on the Connect button.
