How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

Google Calendar integrates several other Google apps on the web. One is Google Maps, which is in the sidebar and opens when you select an address. If you don’t like this feature, though, you can disable it.

If you click an address in an event, it will open a preview of the location in the right sidebar. To open the location on the Google Maps website, you click “Open in Maps.” This is an extra step some people might want to avoid.

Thankfully, eliminating it is very simple. If you’re unfamiliar with the Google Maps sidebar feature, here’s how it works.

Head to the Google Calendar site in a web browser and find an event with a location.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

When you click the link, the sidebar opens with a Google Maps preview of the location. Click “Open in Maps” to see the location on the Google Maps website.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

To disable this, you simply need to hide the sidebar. Close anything that’s open in the sidebar so you only see the app shortcuts.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

Next, click the Arrow (>) at the bottom right to hide the sidebar.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

The sidebar will now be hidden. You’ll only see a little tab with an arrow to expand the applet window.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

Now, whenever you click an address, it will take you directly to Google Maps.

Google Calendar spam is not a new phenomenon; it has plagued Google Calendar users for years and spam seems to come and go in waves. Recently, users started to report an increase in Google Calendar spam. Spam comes in many forms but the two main categories fall into advertising and outright malicious messages.

Google Calendar customers who did not receive spam invites up until now may wonder how that invite got accepted in first place; it is easy to explain: Google Calendar has a feature that automatically adds invitations to Calendar.

All an attacker needs to do is send you an invite using the right format and et voila, the invite becomes visible in Google Calendar.

What makes this particularly problematic, besides the fact that this feature is opt-out and not opt-in, is that the mobile Google Calendar application does not even have the option to disable this.

Here is how you disable auto-invites in Google Calendar

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

  1. Open the Google Calendar application in a browser on a desktop PC. If you try to open the Calendar website on a mobile device you may be redirected to the Calendar application automatically.
  2. Open the Settings menu when the website has loaded and select Settings from the context menu (you need to sign-in to your Google account).
  3. Select Event Settings from the menu on the left or scroll down to the Event settings section on the page.
  4. The setting “Automatically add invitations” needs to be adjusted. It is set to Yes by default which means that invitations are accepted automatically; this is the source of the spam that you receive on Google Calendar.
  5. Switch the value of the setting to “No, only show invitations to which I have responded”.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

If you still receive spam after making that change, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Google Calendar settings again on the desktop.
  2. Scroll down to the “View options” section or click on View Options in the sidebar to jump to the section on activation.
  3. Uncheck the “show declined events” option; this hides declined events in Calendar automatically.
  4. Scroll down to Events from Gmail.
  5. Disable “Automatically add events from Gmail to my Calendar”.

Note that you may need to disable the “show declined events” on the mobile Calendar application as well if you still see those there and use it.

Disabling automatic invites could make things a little less comfortable for Google customers who share calendars with others and used to use the auto-invite system in the past.

Now You: Do you use Google Calendar? Did you receive spam as of lately? (via Caschy)

If the receipt for a flight or hotel is sent to your Gmail account, an appointment is automatically added to Google Calendar. Some people find this useful; some people find it annoying; some people find it downright creepy. If you’re more in the second or third camp than the first, good news: you can disable this feature entirely.

But don’t bother searching Gmail for this setting: you won’t find it. Instead, you’ll need to open up Google Calendar. We’ll also explain how to share those automatically added items with your friends, if you’ve shared your calendar. By default, such items are completely private.

Disable Gmail Events on Your Laptop or Desktop

Open Google Calendar in your browser, then click the gear icon at top-right. Next, click the “Settings” option.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

This will bring you to the settings for your Google calendar account. On the “General” tab, look for the “Events from Gmail” section.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

To stop the items from being added at all, simply turn off the “Add automatically” option.

Just like that, your Gmail items will stop being added to your Google Calendar.

Disable Gmail Events on Mobile Devices

You can also toggle this setting from your mobile device. The following instructions are for Android, but the method should be the same for iPhone and iPad.

In the Google Calendar app, open the sidebar and tap the “Settings” option.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

On the “Settings” page, tap the “Events from Gmail” button.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

On the “Events from Gmail” page just turn off the “Add events from Gmail” option.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

Pay attention if you’ve got multiple Gmail accounts: there is a separate section for each account here. Disable whichever you want, and Google Calendar will stop scraping Gmail for events to add to your calendar.

Configure Who Can See Your Gmail Events

If you’re like me, you’ve shared your calendar with family, so they can see what’s up in your life. You might assume they can see your Gmail-added items, but they can’t. By default, only you can see these items. If you’d like to change this, head to the same settings panel as above, this time paying attention to the “Visibility” options.

How to stop google calendar from opening maps in the sidebar

Select “Calendar default” to have your Gmail events follow the privacy settings of your calendar. Choose “Private,” and only people you’ve specifically shared the calendar with will be able to see these events. Note that unless you share your calendar with the public, these two settings are effectively the same. If you do share your calendar with the public, then the “Calendar default” option will let the public see events from Gmail.
