Introduction
Emulation is a popular pass time for many PC gamers, and in recent year there has been a big increase in GPU horsepower in the mobile market, allowing us to enjoy many classic games on the go, not just on our desktops. The Nvidia Shield is one of the most powerful mobile gaming devices on the market, and this is especially thanks to its Nvidia Tegra 4 GPU/CPU, which is not only capable of running many older games such as those from the Super Nintendo and Mega Drive, but also a lot more advanced 3D titles from consoles such as the Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast and more. What I hope to find out today is whether or not these games work well enough to justify using the Nvidia Shield as a dedicated emulation device.
Obviously there are some grey area legal issues when it comes to emulation, most of which focus around the piracy of compatible roms, so I feel obligated to mention that I do not condone anyone downloading games, but that there are also many other ways to obtain these games. There are tools and apps out there which let you rip games you own, and this applies to both cartridge based games as well as disc based games. Fortunately I’ve been collecting games for many years now and can use games I already own and have at my disposal, but keep in mind that you’re responsible for sourcing your own titles how you see fit, as we here at eTeknix take no responsibility for this, nor will be providing sources to where or how you can obtain the games. Boring stuff out of the way, let us get back to the action!
Getting roms configured on your Nvidia Shield, or to be honest any powerful mobile device can be a little tricky. Generally the more powerful your device, the better chances you’ll have of getting your games to run, as the task of emulating hardware can be quite demanding, especially when it comes to more modern titles such as those from the Sega Dreamcast. So while I am focusing this article on the Nvidia Shield, there is no reason why you can’t try this out on your mobile phone or tablet, so long as you think it’s powerful enough to do so.
The Nvidia Shield has a few extra tricks that make it a great choice for emulation, firstly because it has a controller built directly into it, as well as a high quality touch-screen display. You can use USB OTG to connect wired controllers such as the Xbox 360 controller, a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to put the device into console mode and play on your big screen and more, so you’re not going to be limited to only playing this as a handheld, but virtually anywhere you want, on whichever screen you want (so long as it has Miracast or HDMI).
Today I’ll be taking a look at the Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive, PlayStation 1, PlayStation Portable (PSP), Dreamcast and Nintendo 64. There are plenty more emulators and formats out there, but I feel the ones I have chosen cast a wide net over what is possible on mobile device emulation. Even older or less powerful systems such as Gameboy, MAME, NES and Master System generally all work from the same emulators I’ll be testing and already have widespread, proven compatibility with most mobile devices, so feel free to experiment with them at your own leisure.

Ok, I admit, I am starting to eat my words about my disappointment with Nvidia Shield. Sure, it’s basically just a 5 inch Android device with an Xbox 360 controller permanently mounted to it in a clam-shell design, but this little handheld officially won me over when I discovered I could easily play my PlayStation 4 library on it. GTA V, Destiny, and LittleBigPlanet 3 on a really comfortable to hold handheld? YES PLEASE!
In late 2014, a new phone was released called the Xperia Z3. I ended up picking one up for one ‘exclusive’ feature: to stream my PS4 games to my phone. Sure, it worked well, and I was able to attach my Dual Shock 4 controller to it using a special attachment I purchased on Amazon, but it still felt sort of awkward to use. I liked using the Vita to do remote play at first, but that thing makes my hand cramp when I even look at it now. The only devices I could use to do remote play were my Vita and my phone, or so I thought.
It turns out that the “Remote Play” app that was locked to only work on Sony’s Xperia line of phones has been modified to work with other Android devices, including the Nvidia Shield! Even better, you don’t have to root your device! So do you own a Shield handheld and a PlayStation 4 and want to figure out how to get remote play to work? Well here are the steps:
1. Make sure your Nvidia Shield is updated to at least Android 4.4.2 (or later).
2. Go to the Google Play store and install the Playstation App
3. Download and install the remote play fix from this thread and select the latest version of the app that was modified by xdadeveloper user “twisted89” (I used this test version with my Shield Portable and it seemed to work fine with PS4 firmware 3.0).
4. Start the Remote Play application and skip the “controller pairing” option and just select “next” to detect your PS4
5. Sign in to your PSN account when prompted
6. Go to the remote play settings on the PS4, turn off “direct connect” and select “add device” to add the verification number.
7. This modified apk will automatically detect the Shield’s built-in controller, so be sure to disable all touch mappings by holding the start button.
8. You can increase the resolution to 720p if you are on a 5ghz wireless router. Just click the icon with the 3 dots in the upper right corner to change the settings. You can only change this setting before connecting to your PS4. It was a bit choppy for me though, so I wouldn’t personally recommend using it.
A few extra notes:
If you accidentally push the “back” or “home” button on your controller while playing to edit settings or anything else then you will have to reconnect all over again, but it generally reconnects pretty fast.
The Shield’s controller works great with this! You can “double tap” and swipe the middle of the touch screen to use the PS4’s trackpad. You can also push “the PS button” by touching the touch screen as well. L3 and R3 work directly on the controller.
That’s all there is to it! I went from feeling sort of “meh” about my Nvidia Shield to absolutely loving it now. I can mix-and-match my favorite PC games, PS4 games, and Android apps all from the comfort of one handheld. The best part? I was lucky enough to pick up my Nvidia Shield for $140 new at GameStop! Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to play some portable GTA V on the can.
The best Android emulator for Super Nintendo games
The Nvidia Shield might just be the perfect gizmo on which to play your old-school games on the go.
It’s got a huge screen, great controls, the processing power of a NASA supercomputer, expandable memory, and even HDMI out for gaming on your telly.
So, we wanted to tell you exactly how you go about getting those classic SNES games on your Shield. Yep, we’re going to tell you all about the best emulator for this job.

Boot up your Shield, head to the Google Play Store, and search for RetroArch. Install this free app on your Shield.
This is an all-in-one emulator that can mimic everything from the NES to the PlayStation and is chock-full of features. It will even detect the Shield when you load the app and automatically configure all the buttons in each emulator.
With the emulator on our Shield, we now need to get some games. We won’t tell you where to find them, but we will show you how to get them onto your device.
If the ROM file is on your computer, simply plug the Shield in with the micro-USB cable and find a device under ‘My Computer’. Make a folder called ‘ROMs’ or ‘Games’ or ‘Illegally Acquired Content’ and drag-and-drop the .SMC file into this folder.
If you’re on a Mac, you’ll need to use Android File Transfer.
You could instead use a microSD card. Plug one into your computer (you may need an adaptor), drag-and-drop the ROM file onto the card, and then slot the SD card into the back of the Shield.
Or instead of doing all that, you could just get the game on the Shield itself. Find a website with ROMs in a web browser app and download the game straight to the system memory.
So, you have a SNES ROM on your shield. Perfect. Let’s load up RetroArch.
On first load, you will see the screen above. Read through the waiver and tap ‘Keep cores’.
Choose ‘Load Core’ from the RetroArch menu and choose ‘bsnes/higan Performance’. Then, hit ‘Load Content’ and find the ROM from Step 2.
If your ROM is on the microSD card, hit ‘Parent Directory’ twice and then look in sdcard1 to find your ill-gotten games.
Wherever your game is located, tap the ROM to start playing.
You can press the ‘Play’ button (top right of the Shield’s central buttons) to enter the settings. From here, you can save and load a temporary save state. You can also fiddle with options for audio, visuals, inputs, and more.
It’s always recommended to update apps when required; here’s how.
The NVIDIA Shield TV has been a silent hit since its launch in 2017. It’s a mini-PC that allows a customer to access official games on the system, or even use it for unofficial means.
However, they have a wide variety of apps that can be accessed through the Google Play store, as the OS runs on Google’s Android in the background.
While a new UI is here in place of Android, it can be a touch confusing in discovering how to update the apps.
With that, here’s how to update apps on the NVIDIA Shield TV.
Update your apps in the NVIDIA Shield TV
It’s a straight-forward process; you only need to access the Google Play Store app.
- Open your NVIDIA Shield TV’S Google Play Store app and go to My Apps.
- Look through the apps on the list and spot which ones have an update available.
- Update the apps individually by selecting Update. You can also select Update All to do this in one go.
- When prompted, accept the permissions on the apps that ask.

There are already some pre-installed apps that you can use on your NVIDIA Shield TV when you use it for the first time.
It includes apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and others to enable your content to be watched on 1080 or upscaled-4K when it allows.
But these will also require updates when needed; just make sure to check when these updates are available, and they may squash any bugs you’ve experienced.
Gamepass is available on android natively however its not available on android tv. Luckily it’s very easy to install apps on nvidia shield. Let me take you through the process.

Trouble shooting
Possible reasons your having issues installing and playing this app.
- make sure to change your usb settings in your Nvidia shield to compatibility mode.
- if you barely installed the apk installer app. you will need to allow it to install apps.
- make sure ” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>8bitdo is compatible with your xbox controller. Connecting the controller via bluetooth is also an option. However it will have a significant bluetooth lag. ” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>8bitdo eliminates that lag completely.
- if you download the nvidia shield app on your phone, and connect your phone to your nvidia shield through the app. It will allow you to use your phone as a mouse pointer. Some apps are easier to navigate with that.

AetherSX2 is a ps2 emulator recently released released for android. If you have an android phone, it’s simple enough to get it by going to the Google Play store. However it’s not readily available for the Nvidia Shield. Luckily the Nvidia Shield is an android device, so it’s simple enough to side load it. Check out my YouTube video review.
Why would you want to go through the trouble of getting it on the Nvidia Shield?
If playing PS2 games on the big screen is something you would be interested in. Then let’s continue.
First, we need to download AetherSX2 apk from website. The latest is AetherSX2_valpha-702_apkpure.com.apk . Or you can download directly from this link .
You will also need to find your ps2 roms. and PS2 bios file. For legal reasons I cannot provide links to these. A simple google search can point you in the right direction. Just google “PS2 roms” and “PS2 bios“. PS2 games are “BIG”. Get your self a usb drive, preferably a 256GB. Nvidia Shield is a bit finicky with which usb drives it prefers. I’ve had a good experience with these.
Once you have all the required files mentioned above and your flash drive. We can continue.
First, let me start by saying AetherSX2 is still in beta phase. Which means somethings are still not quite there yet. Don’t let this deter you though. It’s just a few extra steps to glory.
Make a folder on the flash drive and call it PS2. Drag your roms in there. You can also put your PS2 bios in that folder.
put your AetherSX2_valpha-702_apkpure.com.apk file in the root of the flash drive. It should look like this.
Now, on your Nvidia shield. Download an app that can install apk files. I liked APK Installer. It’s super simple to use.

Just double click the play button on your Nvidia Shield remote and a mouse cursor will appear on the screen. You can then use the up and down buttons on the remote to move the cursor and the central button to click on what you want.
