As an addition, let’s explain how to mute others on Zoom. You can only do this if you are the host of the meeting. There are two methods to do so:

1. Mute Everyone on the Zoom Call

In the menu that appears when you tap your screen during a call, you’ll see the Participants option. Tap on it to enter the list of people included in the call. Below the list of participants, you’ll see the Mute All option at the bottom of the screen. When you tap it, there’ll be a pop-up where you can confirm the action. Also, in the pop-up, you’ll see the checked option to Allow participants to unmute themselves. If you uncheck this, the other participants won’t have the option to re-enable their audio for the conversation.

2. Mute Individual Participants

If you’d like to mute only certain individuals in the call, you’ll need to enter the Participants page once again. Once there, tap on the name of the person you’d like to mute and pick the Mute Audio option. You can unmute them whenever you want by choosing Unmute Audio from the same menu.

How to Mute Zoom on a Windows Device

For Windows smartphones using Zoom, the process will be the same as for iPhone and Android users. However, if you’re on a Windows PC, there are some different options. Zoom is made with computer users in mind, so the app has a range of keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys set up for those operating systems.

The default shortcut to mute Zoom in Windows is Alt+A. You can customize the shortcuts by going to Settings in your Zoom client. From there, click on Keyboard Shortcuts, and you’ll see the full list with the option to change each individual shortcut.

Other useful keyboard commands for Zoom in Windows include:

1. Starting or stopping video: Alt + V

Taking photos with a smartphone

A smartphone is probably the most convenient camera you can have. You’ll always have it with you, it fits in your pocket, and it doesn’t require any manual adjustments before you can take a photo. Even if you own a nicer camera, you’ll probably still use your smartphone to capture unexpected photo moments. Therefore, it’s a good idea to learn how your phone’s camera works so you’ll be ready when you want to take a photo.

As you can see in the photos below, each smartphone has different features and may put common features in different places.

Focusing

Many phones have basic cameras that use a focus-free system (which means pretty much everything stays in focus all the time). However, more and more phones are starting to have high-quality cameras that require focusing.

As you learned in our lesson on Getting to Know Your Camera, most cameras use a two-stage shutter button to trigger the auto-focus. Some smartphones, such as the Motorola Droid, have a two-stage shutter button. To auto-focus the camera, you’ll simply press the shutter button halfway down. Other phones, such as the iPhone, allow you to touch a specific area of the screen to focus the camera. When you do this, the iPhone will also adjust the exposure so the focal point of your photo will always look good.

Zooming

Many smartphones have a digital zoom you can use to capture small or distant objects. On the iPhone, you can bring up the zoom slider by using a pinch gesture, while on an Android phone you can tap the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons. It’s important to keep in mind that this is a digital zoom, which is of a lower quality than an optical zoom.

Scene modes

Scene modes are a great way to take better photos in specific situations. For example, the Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait, and Closeup/Macro modes are each tailored to different situations. Some smartphones allow you to select scene modes. For example, many Android phones allow you to tap the right side of the screen to access scene modes (as well as other options).

Other features

Some smartphones have additional features you can use to take better photos. Here are a few features your phone may have:

• Grid: The iPhone can display a rule of thirds grid on the screen to help you compose your photo. You can access this by tapping the Options button at the top of the screen.
• HDR (High Dynamic Range): This mode helps you capture more detail in the shadows and highlights of your photos. Generally, it will only work when your subject isn’t moving.
• Flash: Many smartphones have a flash to help you take low-light photos.
• Effects: Some smartphones allow you to apply effects to your photos, which can include black-and-white, tinted, or vintage filters. On Android phones, you can tap the right side of the screen to access the effects.
• Front-facing camera: The iPhone has a second camera just above the screen. This makes it easier to take a photo of yourself, since you can see the screen while you’re taking the photo.

How To Mute Participants in Zoom

In order to mute participants in Zoom you need to either be the host or cohost of a meeting. As the host or cohost of a meeting, you can mute one, or all participants. The benefit of muting participants allows the speaker to have center stage while also minimizing distraction from audio feedback. There are several methods to mute participants. The first is through the Participants Panel.

To begin, select the “Manage Participants” button found on the menu bar in Zoom. This will launch the Participants Panel.

The Participants Panel will allow you to select a specific participant to mute. To mute a specific participant, hover over the participant’s name and the “Mute” button will appear. Select the “Mute” button to turn off the participant’s audio. Once “Mute” has been selected, the button changes to “Unmute” next to the participant’s name, see Figure 2 for illustration.

Another option to choose from is to turn all participants mute by selecting “Mute All ” from the buttons at the bottom of the Participants Panel. Once you turn this option on you will be prompted by a dialog box with a checkbox for allowing participants to unmute themselves. It is important to enable this checkbox to allow the participant to turn their audio back on should they plan to talk or present, see Figure 3 for illustration.

Also from the Participants Panel, you have the option of muting participants upon entry of the meeting by selecting the “More” button menu at the bottom of the Participants Panel, see Figure 2 for illustration. Choosing this option will automatically mute participants as they enter the meeting relieving the host from monitoring participants as they enter. This option can be toggled on and off by using the same method.

The final way to set participants to mute is done outside the Participants Panel when you are setting up your Zoom Meeting. While logged into Zoom, scroll down the Meetings Setting’s page and toggle the button to the right to turn on the “Automatically mute participants as the enter the meeting” option, see Figure 4 for illustration. This will automatically mute participants as they enter the meeting.

Zoom, unlike the rest of us, is having a pretty banner year. As we’ve all become very familiar with the concept of self-quarantining, isolation, and social distancing, video-calling software has become very familiar to many who would otherwise never use it. But, understandably, there are some who haven’t quite mastered the subtleties — like muting.

Muting oneself on Zoom is something that sounds like a simple task, but I feel like we’ve all seen at least one video of someone failing to mute themselves with hilarious (or cringeworthy) results. It’s a relatively harmless mistake, if an avoidable one. But as we all settle in to what will undoubtedly be another period of working from home, family calls, and long-distance learning, we’re all going to have to get more familiar with Zoom. There’s no reason to claim ignorance to excuse mishaps like this — just avoid them all together.

So here’s how to adjust your settings to either mute everyone on a call, or to automatically mute yourself so you don’t have any more Zoom accidents.

First, how to mute yourself. The settings for this can be found in the Zoom desktop and mobile apps under “Audio” (or “Meetings” on iOS). About halfway down the screen, you’ll see the option to “Mute my microphone when joining a meeting.”

Toggling this option means you won’t have to worry about rushing for the mute button when you join a meeting. It’s great for me, as my office has an air conditioning vent near my desk, and I’ve stopped more than one call cold (no pun intended) by joining with a sound like hell’s damned souls screaming into my microphone. So I keep this on just to be safe.

Next, if you’re a call host, you can mute everyone by force. There is an option to mute one person, but the problem is that the person you muted can still unmute themselves as soon as you mute them. However, the simpler, nuclear option is to just mute everyone upon entry. The method of doing this is a bit different depending on what platform you’re using. For example, you can find the option in Zoom’s browser-based settings under “Schedule Meeting.”

On Zoom’s desktop app, you can only do this once you’ve started the meeting, by clicking “Participants.” There’ll be an option to “Mute All” at the bottom of the window, and tapping this will bring up a window with an option to allow anyone to unmute themselves, which you can easily uncheck. This eliminates the chance that anyone can just unmute themselves when you wish for silence.

On mobile, you do this once the meeting’s started by tapping “More” on the bottom bar and then “Meeting Settings.” Within those settings, you’ll find the toggle to “Mute Upon Entry,” which ensures everyone who joins will be silent.

And that’s it! That’s how you avoid some easily avoided situations on Zoom involving an open mic. Good luck!

It’s great for small teams, but it gets a little more challenging for larger griefs. In this CoCo brief, we’ll talk about 5 best practices that we’ve learned from an unlikely source: The Union Church in Newton, Massachusetts.

The Union Church has been successfully running their Sunday services on Zoom, with upwards of 100 attendees per service. What’s working for them can also apply to your business, community organization, or larger team meeting.

Best Practice #1: Put large groups on mute. Once you get over half a dozen people, the background noise level gets distracting. If you try to mute people one at a time, you’ll end up playing Whack-A-Mole. Mute everyone from the beginning, explaining what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. (“We’re muting folks to keep down the background noise, but we’ll give you opportunities to talk and participate.”)

Best Practice #2: Mix up the presenters. At the Union Church, the senior pastor starts off presenting, followed by musicians, then lay leaders, then back to the pastors. This keeps the meeting flowing. Avoid one person talking for a solid hour; make it a team effort. (You may want to rehearse.)

Best Practice #3: Encourage questions. The “Chat” function in Zoom allows attendees to type in a question, and “Raise Hand” allows people to ask a question verbally. The Union Church uses these for moments of interaction (like taking prayer requests, or letting people ask questions during a sermon).

Best Practice #4: Allow moments of interaction. For example, the Union Church has a “greeting time” where everyone comes off mute, and folks can say hello. They do the same at the end of the meeting, an informal time where people hang out for up to half an hour. It’s noisy, but it works.

Best Practice #5: Keep it short. Our experience is that even in the best Zoom meetings, people start to fade after 45 minutes. Try to keep larger meetings under an hour. Remember that people can close their Zoom window anytime; a leader’s goal (like a TV show host) is to keep them engaged until the end.

You may wish to mute yourself or others on Zoom, especially if you are in a large group meeting.

With the various options on both the desktop and mobile app, you can choose to mute yourself, an individual caller, or all participants on the call. The process looks a bit different on either app, but involves tapping or clicking the mute symbol. You can also open the “Manage Participants” menu to mute or unmute all members.

It’s important to note that you will only have the ability to mute or unmute others if you are the host of the meeting. Participants do not have the ability to mute others, though they can of course mute themselves.

Depending on the settings, your participants will get pop-up alerts that read, “The host would like to mute/unmute your microphone.” As a participant, you’ll have the option to stay muted or to unmute yourself.

Here’s how to mute on Zoom .

How to mute on Zoom on a computer

1. On a desktop Zoom call, move your cursor for options to appear on the Zoom participant squares. This will also reveal the bottom toolbar.

2. Click the “Mute” microphone option in the bottom left corner. Click again to unmute. This mutes your own microphone — others on the call will no longer be able to hear you.

3. Hover over a participant for options to appear on their rectangle. Click the blue “Mute” button to mute this participant. You can also right click or click the three dots to open a pop-up menu. Click “Mute Audio.” Once a participant is muted, you can follow the same steps to unmute.

4. To manage all of your participants as the meeting host, you can click the “Manage Participants” tab at the bottom toolbar. A number will indicate how many people are currently on the call.

5. This will open a sidebar with each of the participants next to microphone and video icons. The host will be labeled as well.

6. As the host, you can hover over a microphone to mute that individual participant. A blue “Mute” or “Unmute” button will appear.

7. You can also click the “Mute All” or “Unmute All” options at the bottom. This will open a pop-up. You can check the box which will allow participants to unmute themselves. If so, callers will receive a message that reads, “The host would like to mute/unmute your microphone,” when you make changes.

8. Click “Continue” to complete the change.

How to mute on Zoom on a mobile device

1. On a current call in the mobile app, tap to reveal the bottom menu. You’ll see the mute microphone icon in the bottom left hand corner. Tap this to mute just yourself.

2. You can also tap the volume button in the upper left hand corner so an “X” appears over the speaker icon. However, this will just mute the sound on this device app — it’s important to note this is not the same as muting yourself or other participants. Tap this option again to play sound again. Tap the “Unmute” microphone icon in the bottom left hand corner to unmute yourself.

3. To manage all of the video participants, tap the “Participants” tab at the bottom.

4. This will open a pop-up. Tap an individual participant to mute their audio. The microphone icons next to individual names will reflect changes. Tap their name again and tap “Unmute Audio” to reverse the change.

5. To mute all participants, tap “Mute All” in the bottom right hand corner, then tap the blue “Mute All” button to confirm the change. You can check the option to allow participants to unmute themselves if you’d like.
