Possible but not always easy
Downloading videos is easy when you see a download button. Unfortunately, most video sharing sites obviously don’t allow downloads, usually to protect copyrights or because there’s not a large demand to download their videos. But there are tools and tricks you can use to download videos even when there isn’t a download button.
Maybe you want to download a video you found on a news site, or save a YouTube video to your computer? If you’re watching a free movie online and you want to save it to watch later on an airplane, you’ll want to download the video.
Regardless of your reason in doing so, downloading videos from the internet is usually possible, just not always easy. There are video downloaders you can try (these are your best bet) but also browser tricks to reveal hidden download links.
Important: Be mindful of the website you’re downloading the video from, as well as any copyright laws you might be breaking. Lots of videos aren’t legal to download because the owner hasn’t given you permission to do so.
Download a Video With a Downloader Tool
The easiest way to download a video from a website when there isn’t a clear download button is to use a video downloader tool. These are specially made programs or web apps that look for and extract videos from webpages.
Catch.tube is one of the best ones out there. It’s totally free and works on popular websites like Twitter, CNN, Tumblr, YouTube, Facebook, and others. To use this free video downloader, just visit the website and paste the URL that contains the video.
Some other video downloaders you can try include Catchvideo.net, Savethevideo.com, RipSave, and the Chrome extension Video Downloader.
Hack Your Browser To Download a Video
Every webpage is made up of code that you don’t see unless you peer behind the scenes, and any video you watch is being streamed from a particular source. If you can find the source link from within the code, you might be able to reach a download link.
One clear example of where this works is with YouTube videos. Downloading videos from YouTube is a popular request and there are lots of tools that can do it (many that charge), so you might be surprised to learn that you can download any video from YouTube with nothing more than a browser hack. You can also download entire YouTube playlists at once.
A desktop web browser loads YouTube videos differently than a mobile one, so the idea here is to tell your desktop browser to request the YouTube video as if you were on a mobile device. Once your browser loads the page, a unique download link is visible, but only if you uncover the source code of the page.
- Open Firefox and go to about:config. Treat that like a URL, so enter it into the navigation area at the top of the browser.
- Right-click in an empty space and go to New >String.
- Name it general.useragent.override and then put this code there:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_3 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) FxiOS/1.0 Mobile/12F69 Safari/600.1.4
- Open a new tab and find the YouTube video you want to download.
- Start the video and let it play for a few seconds. If there’s an ad, let that finish first.
- Right-click the video and choose Inspect Element.
- In the new window that opens, find
- Open a new tab in Firefox (or any browser) and enter that into the navigation bar.
- Right-click the video in that tab and choose Save Video As.
- Download videoplayback.mp4 to your computer to save the YouTube video. You can rename it if you want.
- Return to the tab with the user agent setting, right-click the new string you made, and select Reset to return Firefox to desktop mode.
Here’s another example where a CNN weather video has no download link on the surface, but if you turn Firefox into mobile mode and refresh the page, the source shows a simple MP4 download link.
This exact technique to download a video won’t work for every video on other websites become some video streaming services don’t have mobile versions of their pages, but a similar method might work.
If inspecting the video page doesn’t show a download link, try changing the browser’s user agent like we did above, and then give it another shot. You might also have luck using a different browser like Chrome or Edge.

With Microsoft Powerpoint, you can easily convert your presentation decks into high-resolution video files for uploading to YouTube and other video sites. The exported video files can also include all the voice narrations and background audio that you may have included in the presentation.
Google Slides doesn’t offer an option to save presentations as videos but there’s a new add-on in town – Creator Studio – that brings new export capabilities to your Google Slides. With Creator Studio, you’ll be able to save your decks as animated GIFs, image sequences and HD video (with audio).
Watch the video tutorial for a quick introduction.
To get started, go to creatorstudio.dev and install the Google Slides add-on. It requests certain permissions as it has to read the presentation images for converting them into movies. It also requires access to creating files in your Google Drive since the exported files are automatically uploaded to your Google Drive.
Once the add-on is installed, open any deck inside Google Slides that has at least 2 or more slides. Go to the add-ons menu, choose Creator Studio and it will open up a sidebar.
Specify the width of the output file in pixels. Creator Studio will auto-calculate the height to maintain the original aspect ratio of the presentation. Next, specify the time interval (in seconds) and this is the duration for which each slide would be visible in the video before advancing to the next slide.
Finally, you have a variety of export options to choose from that are not available natively inside Google Slides.
GIF Image
An infinite looping animated GIF image is created that is perfect for sharing inside email messages and blog posts. You can even make stop motion animations by keeping the time interval very low (say 0.2 seconds).
Image Sequence
Creator Studio will capture screenshots of each slide in your presentation and save it as a numbered PNG file in your Google Drive folder. Internally, it uses the Google Slides API to generate these thumbnail images.
MP4 Video
Like the GIF image, Creator Studio will produce an MP4 video file from your deck and you can also vary the time interval between slides.
Video with Audio
You can upload any audio file in MP3 or WAV format and it will play alongside the presentation. You can upload background music or even voice narration that will play in the background while the video is playing.
Alright, the first thing that we need to admit is that we’re standing on the shoulders of electronic giants — downloading Google Video is nothing new. In fact, the means to do it are plentiful. Good people, all over the world, have been hard at work, creating various ways of accessing and downloading video content. Here are but a few:
How do these tools do it? How do you extract at the non-Flash file from a Google Video page? Curious? Read on…
If you’ve used Google Video before, you’ve noticed that most pages have the option to download the video as either a GVP (to be used in Google’s Video Player) or MP4 file (for viewing on an iPod or Sony PSP). Typically, there is a “Download” button located to the right of the video; sometimes there is not. Retrieving an MP4 file is easy — just click the link — no hack needed here.
But what about AVI files? Google doesn’t post that information….do they? Sure they do. Take notice of the other download option that Google provides, a GVP file. What is a GVP file? Download one and open it in your favorite text editor (the example is from “Monkey teases Dog”…..oh those silly monkeys). Examine the GVP file, and you’ll see that it is nothing more than a proprietary header file containing information about the video. Now, take a closer look at the “url” embedded inside the file — it’s not the same URL that you used to view the video or to download “MonkeyteasesDog.gvp”. Copy/paste it in your browser — it’s the direct link to the AVI file. Neat! Now you can create your own extractor tool. All you need is a way to parse out the GVP link, a means of finding the URL inside the file, and and some redirect code. It’s easy, and fun for the kids too…
Ever wonder how they name a GVP file? The file names follow a standard format. They are a truncated, 20-character (or less) representation of the video title, with offending characters and whitespaces stripped from the string. The links to the GVP files are created by linking to the GVP file name, then the docid is then tacked to the query string, and voila!, you’ve got your URL.
Don’t leave yet! There’s still another method to get at these sacred files, one which is less know but easier and more bountiful….RSS.
Simply put, you can query Google for RSS, and extract all three URLs from the feed (FLV, MP4, and AVI).
How do you get an RSS feed from Google? Add “&output=rss” to the end of a search URL. For example, if we do a search for monkey videos, it looks like this:
RSS-ize it, we get the following:
Viewing the RSS feed, you immediately recognize standard element tags (i.e. title, description, etc). Look down a little further and you’ll notice that Google also utilizes the media:group and media:content sub-elements. While the number of media:content elements in a given item will vary, most will contain at least one with a type attribute of “video/x-flv”. In many cases, we’re provided with more — either a “video/x-msvideo” or “video/mp4”. And those, my friends, are the goods. The urls associated with those media:content elements are the direct links to download the AVI and MP4 files.
Given the ease of retrieving and parsing RSS files, you can imagine how simple it would be to create a Google Video search and download tool of your own. I made one: a simple XHMTL search tool for mobile phones:
Enjoy, and best of luck in creating your own tools.
In order to export all the Google photos, you will have to visit the Google Takeout site. Read on to know more about it.
Google on Wednesday announced that it will change the policy of offering free unlimited storage service. Starting June 1, 2021, the company will ask users to pay for the service if they exceed the 15GB storage cap. The price of 100GB storage is Rs 130 per month or Rs 1,300 on a yearly basis. So, if you don’t want to pay for the service and planning to switch to any other service, then you might want all your data from Google. For this, you will have to visit the Google Takeout site. Read on to know more about it.
What is Google Takeout?
Google Takeout is basically a service that lets you take all the data that you have stored in your Google account. You can download all your data from here all at once. So, your contacts, Google Drive files, YouTube videos you’ve watched and every other thing associated with your Google account can be downloaded from here. You can easily take a back up of all the data from here and your Google account won’t be affected by this. However, do note that you don’t get to filter the albums when exporting photos or videos. You are allowed to select or deselect the dates of the photos you want to export.
Google Photos: How to export photos and videos
Step 1: Make sure you have signed in to your Google account. Now, you need to visit the “takeout.google.com” website to export all your data that Google has.
Step 2: Once the site opens, just click on the “Deselect all” option.
Step 3: Scroll down > select Google Photos > scroll down > click on Next Step.
Step 4: In the frequency option, you get two options, including export once, and export every two months for one year. You also need to choose between .zip files and .tgz files. Google even lets you select file sizes, available with up to 50GB. Once done, press on Create export. Google will then send an email to your account to verify. The message says “an archive of Google data has been requested.”
You are also allowed to add your files directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box. Once the process of export starts, Google takes a few hours or a few days, but this completely depends on how much data you are asking Google to download. In the end, the search giant will email you that the data is ready to download.

Force Download from Google Drive – Google Drive is only second to Dropbox and you can easily upload and share files using the awesome cloud storage service. In Google Drive, you can pretty much upload and share almost any and all sorts of files. Moreover, you can collaborate with your team members on editing and modify these uploaded files.
That being said, Just like in Dropbox, there is no easy way to download files or docs from Google Drive as it can pretty easily handle most of the common file types and displays or renders them directly in your browser. How to Download From Google Drive to Local Storage and Delete Duplicates
Last Updated : 10th December 2020 | Author: Wide Angle Software Dev Team
Introduction
Cloud Storage can be a very convenient way you can store your data (photos, videos, music etc.) remotely using platforms like iCloud and Google Drive. You can then access your data stored in the cloud via the internet using any of your devices (computers, mobile devices etc.).
As the demand for more and higher quality media increases, so too does the requirement for more space to store such media. Since the hardware (e.g. a hard drive in an iPhone) cannot keep up with this demand, people turn to Cloud Storage to store their data – this keeps space free on their mobile device.
Google Drive is Google’s answer to the people’s calls for cloud storage.
Get the most out of your Drive – get rid of duplicates to save yourself time and money.
So, you’ve set up your Google Drive and have saved some files there. How do you download those files to your computer or to your phone?
Quick Jump to:
- Download from Google Drive to PC
- Download from Google Drive to iPhone
- Delete duplicates from Google Drive
Method 1: Download files from Google Drive to PC
First, ask yourself whether you want to transfer certain files from Google Drive to your computer, or whether you would prefer to always keep your computer and Google Drive in sync.
The first option will do for those who only want certain files from their Google Drive, or who only rarely need Google Drive files on their computer.
For those who always want access to their Google Drive files from their computer, I would recommend using Google’s “Backup & Sync” app. Any files added, removed or edited on Google Drive will be reflected automatically on your computer, so you can keep all your up to date files in both locations at once.
Let’s see how to download from Google Drive to PC:
- Open the Google Drive website ().
- If you’re not logged into your Google account already, click “Go to Google Drive” and enter your details.
- Select all the files that you wish to download. You can hold the “ctrl” key on your keyboard while clicking multiple files to select many files at once. Or after clicking a file, hit “ctrl + A” on your keyboard to select all files in your Drive. If you are using a Mac, use “cmd” instead of “ctrl”.
- Click the menu icon in the top-right corner of the window to access More Actions.
- Click “Download“.
- Your files will be downloaded from Google Drive to your computer as a zipped file. To access these files on your computer, you’ll first need to extract them (you’ll find an “Extract” option when you open the folder in File Explorer).
Now let’s see how to sync files from Google Drive to PC. The Backup & Sync setup wizard will take you through this process, but I’ve noted the steps below for you as well:
- Download Google’s “Backup & Sync” from
- Click “Agree and Download” to begin the download.
- Double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation.
- When the install is complete, click “Get Started“.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- If you wish to also sync folders from your computer with Google Drive, check the relevant checkboxes (when you add, edit or remove files in these folders, they will also be reflected in Google Drive).
- Click “Next” to continue with the setup.
- Click “Got It” to proceed.
- Check “Sync My Drive to this computer“.
- Choose to either sync all folders from Google Drive with your computer, or to only sync certain folders.
- Click “Start” to download files from Google Drive to your computer.
Depending on how many files you have chosen to sync, the download may take some time. However, when the download is complete, you will be able to access your Google Drive files on your computer.
To do this, open File Explorer on your computer, then click “Google Drive” from the left-hand column.
Method 2: Download from Google Drive to iPhone
Downloading files from your Google Drive to your iPhone is easy, but first, you’ll need the Google Drive app on your iPhone.
If you’ve not already got the Google Drive app on your iPhone, you can download it from the App Store.
How to download files from Google Drive to iPhone:
- Open the Google Drive app on your iPhone.
- Tap the menu icon next to the file you wish to download.
- Tap “Open In“.
- Select the app to open the file in, and it will be downloaded to your device.
How to download photos and videos from Google Drive to iPhone:
- Open the Google Drive app on your iPhone.
- Tap the menu icon next to the photo or video you wish to download.
- Tap “Send a Copy“
- Tap “Save Image” or “Save Video“.
- The file will be added your iPhone Photos app.
Method 3: Delete Duplicates from Google Drive
So, we’ve seen how to download files and photos from Google Drive to your computer and to your iPhone.
However, you may find that in the process of transferring files from place to place or saving files from different devices; that you will accumulate duplicates of some of your files.
Not only are duplicate files annoying and messy, but they take up valuable space in your Google Drive. Since you only get 15GB free space with Google Drive, duplicates can eat away at this allowance and may eventually cause you to consider upgrading to gain more space even though you may not need to.
There’s a simple remedy for this issue – Duplicate Sweeper.
Duplicate Sweeper is a handy tool for your Windows PC or Mac which scans your folders and deletes duplicate files based on your preferences. It can save you hours or even days of looking through folders and files to discover if files are duplicated and considering which ones to move.
Duplicate Sweeper can quickly scan multiple folder or drives to return your duplicates. Simply select whether to keep the newest or the oldest of each duplicate to remove them automatically, or manually select which to remove.
