Even if you don’t have much drawing talent, it’s surprisingly easy to create a photorealistic caricature from a photograph with good resolution and a few minutes in Photoshop. Grab an image and get ready to become a caricature artist!
For the record, we’re using pictures of US presidents for our source material, but there’s no reason you can’t make your friends look goofy with this easy technique. A few minutes is all it takes to transform your photos. Give it a shot!
Using the Liquify Tool
It’s sort of a miracle within the program—the liquify tool is easy to use and allows you to warp images pretty precisely without ruining textures or image quality. Well, without completely ruining it, at least.
Find the Liquify tool by navigating to Filter > Liquify.
These tools are the ones we’re going to be using today in our video howto. The tools that are probably the most useful are Forward Warp, Pucker, and Bloat. Forward Warp pushes and distorts parts of the image, while Pucker and Bloat shrink and enlarge the areas underneath the brush area. The Reconstruct Tool sort of like an undo brush—it undoes all changed to the image and reverts what you paint back to the original image. Use it to correct the parts that get really weird, and remember you can always use Ctrl + Z to undo.
This is another key area, where you can adjust your brush size and strength (density and pressure, as they read here). You can safely ignore the rest of the options in the Liquefy tool if you don’t want to delve too deeply into it.
Video: The Liquefy Tool In Action
More Examples Before You Try Your Own
The results often come out surreal, if not hilarious. Caricature is a little bit about making fun of your subject, so go wild when you do.
Low resolution images work, too, but aren’t ideal. Try your own pictures—make your own out of your friends and family.
Questions or comments? Can’t get the same result from our method? Have a better method? Think this is a massive waste of time? Tell us about it in the comments, or just email the author at [email protected]

Have some fun transforming yourself, your family members or your work colleagues into a bobblehead style caricature with this step-by-step tutorial for Adobe Photoshop. We’ll make use of Photoshop’s image manipulation techniques to exaggerate the features of a portrait photograph to give it a funny cartoon-like appearance. Since we’re using a photograph as the source, rather than illustrating the caricature by hand, it retains degree of realism and retains a strong resemblance to the subject.
Exaggerating the subject’s proportions with an oversized head and eyes will be the first step to transform the subject from a life-like photograph to a comedic caricature. We’ll then use some processing techniques to enhance the skin, giving it a hyperrealistic appearance similar to a vinyl toy or 3D model.
To achieve the best results, you need a high resolution portrait photograph with sharp details. For the purpose of this tutorial, I’m using this stock image by Wayhome studio from Shutterstock. Ideally the subject will have short or tied up hair and will be set against a clean background to make the clipping process easier.

In this article we’ll try to explain the easiest way for turning an ordinary photo into a realistic caricature. For this, we’ll use the Liquify; a powerful feature of Photoshop. Liquify is mostly used to retouch body parts (e.g. make a model look slimmer), add pseudo depth (3d look) and with a little bit of imagination you can use it to create your caricature.
Tutorial Details
- Program: Adobe Photoshop
- Version: CS5
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Estimated Completion Time: 1 hour
Tutorial Assets
- Teenager by 2happy
Final Result
Step 1
Open the photo you want to distort (you can use the photo from the tutorial assets). The areas that you have to focus are these.
Step 2
Go Filter>Liquify and use the Bloat Tool (experiment with the brush size).
Step 3
Now use the Pucker Tool.
Step 4
Finally make some adjustments using the Forward Warp Tool.
Step 5
If you follow these steps, your photo should end up looking something like this.
Note: If you’ll use your own photo, make sure to pay attention to the background as it shouldn’t be distorted.
Step 6
Duplicate the photo and select the original photo. Desaturate it (Ctrl+Shift+U / Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation: Saturation -100). Now select the copy layer and change the Blend Mode to Multiply.
Step 7
Create a new layer and pick the Gradient Tool (G). Select the Radial Gradient (color to transparent) and pick #7bb5de as your foreground color. Draw a gradient like the one below and change the Blend Mode to Color Burn and the Fill to 40%.
Step 8
Merge all the layers and go Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen. Experiment with the parametres until you find something that works good for you (in this tutorial I used Amount:56%, Radius:1px and Remove: Gaussian Blur).
Variation
Conclusion
Your caricature is now ready. You can now add any effects you want to make it look even better. For instance, follow the “Turn an Ordinary Photo into an Oil Painting in Photoshop” tutorial for an artistic effect.

This tutorial is about how to make a caricature with photo edit from an image using Adobe Photoshop CS6. I hope it will help you both the beginner and advanced level of students in a great deal. It is very exciting. I believe everyone will like it.
Hit Ctrl + Space to select the face of the person. After selecting right click and make selection. Then click Ctrl + Shift + I to inverse it. Click on ‘Add layer mask.’ Hit Ctrl + J. The layer thumbnail should be at the top and close the eye of the 2nd layer. After removing some hair using eraser tool, click on Ctrl + O again. Open a new document by going to File> New. Add a layer 0 by double clicking on the background. Click on Layer 0 and select blending options. Select ‘Gradient Overlay’ and select the style to ‘Radial.’ Lower the opacity a little bit. Now, copy the image that includes the face of a person and paste it to Layer 0. Select Ctrl + T and place it perfectly. Create layer 1 copy and close the eye of layer 1. Go to Filter>Camera Raw Filter. Make some adjustments where it requires include highlights, shadows, exposure, saturation.
Make another copy in the name of layer 1 copy 2. Close the eye of layer 1 and layer 1 copy. Select ‘lasso tool’ and select the lips. Add a new layer now. Hit Ctrl + T and enlarge it. Select the brush tool and remove the unnecessary portion that is there in the face. Select layer 1 copy 2 and select lasso tool. Select the nose with the lasso tool. Add another layer and put that layer on top. Hit Ctrl + T, enlarge it and place it as you like using warp. Click layer 1 copy 2 and select the eyes using lasso tool. Do one eye at a time. Add another layer and put that layer on top. Hit Ctrl + T, enlarge it and place it as you like it. Use the brush tool and erase the unnecessary portion that is there in the face. Hit Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E and add a new layer again.
Go to Filter> Liquify. Select ‘Pucker Tool.’ After that, select ‘Forward Warp Tool’ to work on the face. Close the eye of layer 6 and add another new layer. Select blur tool and make the hair looks not real rather is should look like a cartoon. Open the adjustment layer and select hue/saturation and make some adjustments. Hit Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E to merge all layer. Select the foreground layer and change the blending mode to overlay. Now, select dodge tool and work on the face so that it looks like cartoon all the way. Go to Filter>Camera Raw Filter and make some adjustments. Open the adjustment layer and select selective color. Make some adjustment there as well. It will finish all the process.
I hope that it will help you and from now on, hopefully you will follow this procedure more often in Photoshop and be an expert in this field in the future.

This is Part 4 of a 4 part tutorial
1 The basic shape
2 adding depth
3 LCD display
4 buttons
Are you ready to wrap up this puppy? It’s time for the finishing touches. We are going to learn how to make realistic glass reflections and recessed buttons. Fasten your seatbelts and let’s go…
Make a selection around the screen. The easiest way is to use the magic wand tool.
Create a new layer. This is where we are going to create the reflection.
Set the foreground color to white. Choose the gradient tool and choose the foreground to transparent linear option.
Drag the gradient from the top of the selection about 1/3 of the way down.
Repeat for the bottom except start from the bottom (duh)
To give it more of a rounded look press ctrl/cmd+T for the free transform tool.
Hold down the shift+Alt/option keys and shrink the gradients slightly.
Press enter.
Filter>blur>gaussian blur >2 pixels.
In the layers palette, drop the opacity down to 60%
You should now have realistic looking reflections on the interface. This gives the screen a feeling of depth and realism.
Add some text for effect. What company wouldn’t brand their product?
Adding the buttons
Create a new layer.
Using the custom shape tools, (like we did earlier) Create some shapes to use as the labels on the buttons.
Select the chrome interface shape layer.
Make a selection in the shape of the button.
Press Ctrl/cmd+j This will duplicate the selection onto a new layer.
Note: We have just copied a piece of the interface onto a new layer. By adding a bevel we will make it look like a button.
Click the little “f” at the bottom of the layers palette to open the layer styles dialog box.
Uncheck the drop shadow to turn it off.
Choose bevel and emboss and change to pillow emboss.
Click ok
You should now have an indented looking button.
Repeat these steps for the forward and back buttons, only this time use a circular selection instead of a rectangular. (Don’t forget to choose the interface layer before pressing ctrl+j or nothing will happen)
The final mp4 player (have to be future thinking you know)
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I have in writing it.
Have fun with this and I trust you have learned some new things during our peek into the world of Photorealism.

In this Photoshop tutorial, you will learn an AMAZING technique to create realistic skin texture in Photoshop CC. (Works with Photoshop CS6 as well!)
You will create custom skin texture will help you bring back some of the skin texture details that you may have lost through retouching or the lighting in the portrait.
PTC will teach you a non-destructive technique that will give you a lot of flexibility where you are able to edit and fine-tune your skin texture to achieve a seamless transition between the original skin and your custom-made skin texture.
Photoshop’s Texturizer Filter
For this skin texture tutorial, we will use Photoshop’s Texturizer filter, which allows you to place a texture over a photo, and control the lighting direction.
In some cases, you may want to create a texture from scratch which you could load from the Filter’s fly out menu.
For this one, use a preset to achieve the skin texture effect.
Create the Texture Layer
Create a New Layer above the image layer, and rename it to “Skin Texture.”
Choose Edit > Fill.
On the Fill window, set the Contents to 50% Gray.
Press OK to exit the window.
Then, right-click on the layer and select Convert to Smart Object.
A Smart Object is a container for adjustments, distortions, filters and allows you to apply them non-destructively by being editable.
Apply the Texturizer Filter
Choose Filter > Filter Gallery.
Open the Texture folder.
Select Texturizer.
On the right-side panel, set the Texture to Sandstone since it looks similar to the skin texture.
There are two reasons why this method is better than the Emboss method in other tutorials: you have the option of choosing the direction of the lighting which better matches your photo, and you can upload a custom texture if Sandstone isn’t suitable for your image.
You can also easily create a texture, save it as a Photoshop document, and load it from this drop-down menu > Load Texture.
Use the Scaling and Relief sliders to control the size and intensity of the texture and achieve a more realistic look.
Blend the Skin Texture Layer
To blend the Skin Texture layer with the image, set the Blending Mode to Overlay or Softlight since they both hide 50% Gray and leaves the highlights and shadows that the Filter creates.
For this image, select Soft Light for a subtle effect.
Adjust the Skin Texture Layer
Double-click on the Smart Filter label to edit the Skin Texture to match the portrait.
You can adjust the Scaling to 140, and the Relief to 7.
Selectively Paint In The Areas Where You Want To Apply The Skin Texture
Hold the Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) key as you click on the Layer Mask icon to make one that hides the entire layer.
Select the Brush tool and set the Foreground color to white (#ffffff).
Then, on the Options bar, reduce both the Opacity and Flow to 20% so you can control where you can paint in the skin texture where you need it the most.
