Netflix is a wonderful streaming service, but it can get a little pricey for those subscripted to the service’s highest plan. If you want to switch from Standard to Premium or vice versa, here is how you can accomplish that.

Netflix has three different streaming plans: the Basic plan for $9 a month, the Standard plan for $13 a month, and the Premium plan for $15 a month. Each plan has unlimited access to all of the Netflix content on any device, but the Basic plan has no HD or UHD content and you can only watch on one screen with that plan. The Standard allows for two people to watch content at a time with HD content, while Premium allows four with HD and UHD content.

Switching your Netflix plan is easy to do, and if you’re dropping your Premium plan, it’s an excellent way to keep some money in your pocket each month.

Start by visiting Netflix’s home page using a web browser (not the mobile app) and then select the account icon in the top right-hand corner.

In the drop-down menu that pops up, select the “Account” option.

Under your account settings, there will be a section called “Plan Details”. Click “Change plan” found on the right side of this section.

This will take you to a new page where you can select which plan you want to change to. Check that new plan and then select the “Continue” button to change your membership.

Now, after confirming any payment changes, you’ve successfully changed to a new Netflix plan, whether that’s the cheapest plan or the one with the most device usage.

With so many different Netflix subscription options, you can easily enjoy the streaming service without having to break the bank. It’s a great choice for streaming some of your favorite shows on any device you have. Whether you get the high-definition content or just enjoy the most basic of it all, you’ll love watching any and everything on Netflix.

Even though various companies have released their very own streaming services, all they’ve done is trying to keep up with Netflix. They’re trying to compete with their business model. Still, no matter what innovation they introduce, Netflix fires back by adding it as well.

This trend isn’t likely to stop or slow down anytime soon, which is why many people have decided to stick with Netflix. The service, as you probably know, offers a variety of plan options to its users. Here’s more about Netflix’s plans and how to change to a different one.

Switching Netflix Plans

Whether your aim is switching to a cheaper plan or going for the one with more extensive features, changing your Netflix plan is relatively simple.

However, there are two main ways to change your Netflix plan. Using the website is the obvious one, but, interestingly, you can use iTunes to switch plans, as well.

How to change your netflix plan

The Website

First, go to the Netflix page and sign in to your account. You can’t change your Netflix plan using your smart TV or the Netflix app on your pocket device. You’re going to have to use a browser. You can do all of this via your smartphone, but using the computer browser is quicker.

Now, navigate to the upper-right section and select the primary profile that you’re using. Note that you need to log in through it to change your Netflix plan.

In your profile section, navigate to Plan Details and click this option. The next page will display your current plan.

Next to your current plan, you’ll see the Change Plan option. Click or tap it, depending on the device you’re using. Depending on your region, you’ll have different plans at your disposal. However, in the majority of areas, you’ll have three main streaming plans – (SD), (HD), and (UHD). These three plans feature different prices.

Before making your choice, you need to keep in mind your internet connection. With SD content, the recommended speed is 3 Mbps. HD content requires at least 5 Mbps. At least 25 Mbps is required for the UHD content.

If you can’t see some of these options, they may not be available in your region.

Now, select the plan that you want to switch to and click Continue. All the changes that you’ve made will be in effect as of your next billing cycle.

iTunes

If you’re using iTunes for your Netflix payments, you’ll also use the iTunes app to switch plans. First, open the iTunes app on your computer. At the top of the window in iTunes, click Sign In if needed.

If you aren’t signed in to your iTunes account, make sure that you enter your Apple credentials. Your Netflix credentials won’t work here. Naturally, you should use the same Apple ID that you use to pay for your Netflix subscription.

Now, navigate to your profile image, click it, and then select Account Info. Enter your Apple ID again if prompted. In your iTunes account page, find Subscriptions, click this section, and then choose Manage.

Here, you’ll see your iTunes subscriptions. If you’re using this account to pay for your Netflix, this list of subscriptions will include Netflix.

Now, select the plan that you want. The changes will come in effect with the next billing cycle.

Changing Plans

Most people will switch their Netflix plan through the browser, but, as you can see, you can do it via iTunes, as well. Use this tutorial to change your Netflix plan and enjoy the new one, whichever one you go with.

You can tweak your Netflix account or put the kibosh on it altogether. Here’s how.

Are you no longer interested in keeping your current Netflix subscription alive? Perhaps you don’t watch it as much these days. Or maybe you can’t afford multiple video-streaming services.

Either way, you have two choices. You can modify your subscription and make it less painful on the wallet by cutting back on certain options. Or you can cancel it outright. Modifying is often a good option to choose initially to see if a different plan falls within your budget. But cancelling may be the way to go if you simply don’t watch Netflix’s offerings any longer.

Let’s first go through the steps for modifying your subscription.

Netflix.com

Sign in with your username and password. If you maintain more than one Netflix profile for different family members, click on the button for your profile.

Your Account

At the next screen, click on the down arrow next to your profile image in the upper-right corner and click on “Your Account” from the drop-down menu.

Plan Details

Your Netflix account page displays your various settings and information, including a section on plan details. Depending on what type of plan you have, you’ll see details for a streaming plan or a DVD plan or both. Let’s assume you have both.

Change Streaming Plan

For the streaming plan, click on the link to change plan. A “Change Streaming Plan” screen pops up giving you a few different choices. Assuming you want to scale back on your streaming to reduce the price, click on one of the less expensive options and click on the “Continue” button.

Confirm

DVD Plan

Now let’s say you want to modify your DVD plan. Click on the Go Back button at the “Change Streaming Plan” screen to return to your account page. For the DVD plan, click on the link to change plan. The “Change Plan” page displays the various DVD plans. Again, assuming you want to scale back, click on one of the cheaper plan options and then click on the “Continue button.”

Confirm

At the “Change DVD Plan” window, click on the “Confirm Change” button. The change will take place at your next billing cycle.

Cancel DVD

If you want to cancel your DVD plan, go back to your account page and click on “Cancel DVD plan.” Netflix tries to convince you to hang onto the plan. There’s even an option to pause your shipments should you simply want to give the plan a rest for awhile. But if your mind is made up, click on the “Cancel My DVD Plan” button. Again, your plan remains in effect until the end of the current billing cycle.

Cancel Account

Okay, now let’s say you want to cancel your account altogether. If you have both a streaming and DVD plan, you need to cancel each one separately. First, let’s return to your Netflix account page. If you wish to cancel your streaming subscription, click on the link to “Cancel Streaming Plan.” At the page to “Cancel Your Streaming Plan?” click on the “Finish Cancellation” button. Your streaming plan will be cancelled at the end of your current billing cycle.

When you first sign up for a Netflix account, you are required to select a subscription plan.

The Basic plan is the least expensive but offers the fewest perks; the Premium plan is the most expensive but has the highest resolution and greatest number of viewers allowed at a time; and the Standard plan falls between the two.

Over time, however, you might realize that you use Netflix differently than you expected when you initially selected your plan. Fortunately, it’s easy to change your Netflix plan to the subscription that fits your budget and viewing habits. Here’s how.

I’m so psyched, after decades of having a DVD in a red envelope sitting on my AppleTV unit, I can finally switch my subscription to a streaming-only plan and even save a few bucks! Nice, but how do I do that from the Netflix app on my television?

You’ve had an AppleTV for decades? Nice. What did you watch in the early 90s? 🙂
Oh, okay, you’re exagurrating to make a point. I get that. And it’s good, I do that at least fifty thousand times a day too.
You’re right that Netflix offers a streaming-only account as of November 2010 and that it’s cheaper than any of the DVD rental-in-the-mail options. As of this writing, it’s only $7.99/month, which is a screaming good deal if you ask me!
You cannot, however, update or change your Netflix account from your AppleTV device or any other streaming device (Roku box, DVD play with built-in Netflix streaming, etc). Just not possible because that’s not how they’ve built it.
Instead, you need to use a Web browser and log in to your Netflix account on their site, at which point it’s fairly straightforward. When you’re logged in, look on the top right and you’ll see “Your Account & Help”:

Click on it and on the right side of the screen, you’ll see account options:

You’ll want to choose “Change Plan”, at which point you might well see what I then saw, but perhaps not:

Kinda fun being grandfathered in on an old account, but still, even for me a streaming only subscription to Netflix makes much more sense. I scroll down just a bit and see:
How to change your netflix plan
That’s good. I check the radio box and scroll down to the bottom where there’s the “Continue” option. A mouse click, and…
How to change your netflix plan
Yup, looks good to me. I click on “Confirm Change” and it reminds me that there are no physical DVDs included in the new Netflix streaming only plan:

Yeah, it’s good, it’s good. In fact, it is good, because I’m done:

That’s how you change your Netflix account. As with any Web-based service, i find it useful to poke around in the settings and account configuration options on Netflix so I understand what’s going on and how things are set up. You might find that beneficial too.
