How to change your name on facebook

There are any number of good reasons to change the name on your Facebook account.

Maybe you’re taking on a new spouse’s surname and want your profile to reflect your new name. Or maybe you’ve outgrown your childhood nickname — Billy, let’s say — and want to start going by William instead. Or maybe you just need some change to spice things up.

Why you want to change your name on Facebook is your business, but here’s how to do it.

How to change your name on Facebook

Head to the Facebook website and make sure you’re logged in.

1. Click on the downward-facing arrow at the top right of the page.

2. In the dropdown menu that appears, click “Settings & privacy,” then “Settings.”

3. You should now be on the General Account Settings page. Next to your name, click the word “Edit.”

4. In the boxes at the top of the page, type in the new name you wish to use.

5. Click “Review Change.”

6. In the pop-up, check the new name to make sure you’re satisfied, then type in your password and click “Save Changes.”

You now have a brand new name on Facebook with an otherwise unaffected account.

What to know about changing your name on Facebook

Some social media platforms let you change your name as often as you want. Not so much with Facebook: they only allow for one name change in a 60-day period. And if you change your name too often, that can extend to 120 days.

Also, unlike other platforms, Facebook wants you to use your real name. They allow for common derivative names, like Bob for Robert, Liz for Elizabeth, and Larry for Lawrence, but they don’t want pseudonyms or nonsense names.

If you use a fake name, you risk being banned from Facebook. The company’s own stated policy on the matter reads, in part: “Facebook is a community where everyone uses the name they go by in everyday life. This makes it so that you always know who you’re connecting with.”

The good news is that as long as your name change complies with Facebook’s policies, it won’t have any negative impact on your account. Your friends will still be able to interact with you in all the same ways, no new connections needed, and any pictures or posts in which your former name was tagged will now show your new name.

The previous tutorial explained how to change your current city in Facebook; in this tutorial, we will explain how to update your profile and your “home town“. What you list as home town on Facebook can be your place of birth, or the town in which you spent part of, or most of your childhood.

Update the “Home Town” setting of your Facebook profile

Follow these steps to change your home town:

  • If needed, login to your Facebook account; otherwise, click “Home
  • Then, click on the “Edit My Profile” link
  • The account information screen of Facebook your profile will now open
  • The second text field is labeled “Home Town“, and works much like the previous “Current City” field: it looks like a regular text field, but will check for matches behind the scenes.
  • Place your cursor inside the text field: now start typing your home town’s name.
  • As you type, Facebook automatically starts searching for city names matching the letters you have entered so far, and show them inside a clickable menu of town names:

How to change your name on facebook

  • As soon as you see your birth place / home town name appear in the listing, you can click on it, and Facebook will use it inside that field.
  • If you want to change the home town information displayed on your public profile, just click inside the field and hit the Backspace key (Windows) or Delete key (Mac) to start typing over the existing home town name – it appears “un-editable”, but you can still change it.
  • To remove and delete your home town, just erase all the text in the field (or click on the ” x ” close button in the field), and save your changes. (It doesn’t really delete your home town, but will not be showing any longer on your profile – easy way to hide your home town!)
  • Once you have updated or changed the home town information on your Facebook profile, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, and click on the “Save Changes” button to update this information on your profile (note that the update is reflected right away) .
  • Tip: as you’ll learn in a later tutorial, geographical information like home town or current city can be shown or hidden to everyone, friends only, friends of friends, or yourself only. Privacy settings on Facebook gives you that kind of “granular” control over who sees what in your profile!

How to change your name on facebook

Whether you’ve just gotten married, no longer identify with your birth name, or just want to change the overly formal “Robert” to “Rob” on your profile, here’s how to change the name you’re using on Facebook.

Before diving in, it’s worth having a look at Facebook’s names policy. You’re required to use “the name [you] go by in everyday life”, but this gives you a fair amount of flexibility. My name on Facebook is Harry and it’s what everyone calls me, but it’s not the name on my birth certificate.

You also can’t use things like:

    • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
    • Characters from multiple languages.
    • Titles of any kind.
    • Words or phrases in place of a name.
    • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

As long as you don’t use anything too ridiculous, you should be able to change your name to whatever you want without Facebook having a hissy fit. It’s also worth noting, once you’ve changed your name, you won’t be able to change it again for another 60 days.

To change your name on Facebook, head to the Settings screen. You can get to it by clicking on the arrow in the top right corner and then clicking Settings.

How to change your name on facebook

    Next to Name, click Edit.

How to change your name on facebook

You’ll then be able to edit and change your name to whatever you want.

How to change your name on facebook

Click Review Changes and then enter your password and click Save Changes.

How to change your name on facebook

If you’ve got a nickname, professional name or other name that you don’t necessarily go by in everyday life but want attached to your Facebook profile, click Add Other Names. These other names will help people find you in search, so for example, you’d show up for searches for both your married and maiden names.

How to change your name on facebook

    Click “Add A Nickname, A Birth Name…”

How to change your name on facebook

…and select the kind of name you want to add from the dropdown.

How to change your name on facebook

    Enter whatever name you want.

How to change your name on facebook

If you check the Show at Top of Profile checkbox, the name you choose will be shown in brackets after your Facebook profile name. For example, with this nickname, my Facebook profile would say Harry Guinness (Hazza).

How to change your name on facebook

Click Save Changes and the new name will be added to your Facebook profile.

There can be a number of reasons behind why you would want to change your name on Facebook. You picked a stupid nickname at the time of creating an account and now you are all grown up. You got married and took your OS’s title. You changed your birth name. Maybe, you became a star and took your stage name. Either way, there are plenty of reasons to change name on Facebook but only one way to do it.

    Facebook Name Policy

You can’t just change your name to anything. There are rules you need to follow and Facebook has defined them clearly. What you can and can’t include in your name. The number one rule is that you can’t choose a name that isn’t yours. Don’t pretend to be someone else because if you are caught or someone complains, your profile will be deactivated without intimation. Facebook blocked over 4.5 billion accounts in the first nine months of 2020 alone. A lot of them were bots but many were fake accounts too.

    Some other rules:

    • Can’t use offensive or suggestive words
    • Can’t include numbers, symbols, punctuations, or unusual capitalization
    • Can’t use characters from different languages
    • Can’t use words or phrases instead of your name
    • Can’t use titles that you don’t own like professional or religious
    • Your Facebook name should be the name you have on your ID card
    • Nicknames are allowed but only as a middle name when used with your real name
    • You can add a nickname separately (we will discuss that later below)
    • Can’t use business name in your profile. Create a page for businesses instead

Facebook has a list of ID cards that it considers valid and acceptable but it may vary slightly based on your country of citizenship. Most of us have a driving license or at the very least, a birth certificate. Both are valid.

You cannot change your Facebook name if you have already done so in the last 60 days or less or if you have been changing it frequently. You can also not change your name if Facebook asked you to verify your ID and you failed to submit one.

And that’s it. You are ready to change name on Facebook. Who knew about all these rules!

How to Change Your Name on Facebook on Web

Open Facebook and sign in to your account. Click on the downward facing arrow and select Privacy and settings > Settings > General and there you will find your name with an Edit button on the right.

How to change your name on facebook

You can now enter your first, middle, and last name here. The middle one is optional where you can input your nickname if you so wish.

How to change your name on facebook

Click on Review Changes below once you are done changing name. Facebook will remind you of the 60 day policy which we already discussed above but of you might have scrolled past it in a hurry.

Did you noticed the Add other names option below the notice? That’s where you can add more names if you want to add pen name or some other name you have adopted. The name that appears on your ID should be entered on this screen though.

Don’t forget to save changes when you are done.

How to Change Your Name on Facebook on iOS

Open Facebook app on your iPhone and tap on the menu icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

You will now go to Privacy and settings > Settings > Personal Information > Name. You can change your first, middle, and last name here just like in the web app. The option to add nicknames is right below the Review Change button you see in the screenshot above. Scroll a little to find.

How to Change Your Name on Facebook on Android

The steps will remain the same for Android users too. Open Facebook and you will find the menu icon at the bottom right corner of your screen.

Again, you will follow the same structure going through Privacy and settings > Settings > Personal Information > Name.

How to change your name on facebook

Enter your desired name and other names that you may have. The 60-day name change policy details can be seen. Tap on Review Changes when you are done to save changes.

Wrapping Up: Change Your Name on Facebook

I will suggest you enter your legal name on your Facebook profile. You may go with your stage name or nickname but that should be entered as your middle name or other names. If you are an artist, then you can create a Facebook Page instead of a Profile, and then things will work differently. Facebook naming policy for Pages is different as they are for brands, businesses, and public figures. Always be on the right side of the law.

How to change your name on facebook

If you’re an early adopter, you may have had a Facebook profile from as far back as 2004. Even if your profile hasn’t been around that long, you may have some regrets about the name you decided to use when you signed up.

Maybe you used your full name, but you’re known by a shorter version. Maybe you’ve been married, divorced, and remarried since. Whatever your reason, the good news is that changing your name on Facebook is a fairly simple process, provided you follow the rules.

If you want to change your name on Facebook, here’s what you’ll need to do.

    Facebook Rules for Names

Before you start thinking about changing your name on Facebook, you need to make sure that the name you want to use is going to be allowed.

Facebook has a number of rules that your profile name needs to follow. These include:

    • The name you use (or a version of it) must appear on government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport.
    • You can’t pretend to be someone else.
    • You can use a nickname as a first or middle name as long as its a variation of your given name.
    • You can add a nickname or a maiden name as a second name, but you must still use your real name as your primary name.
    • Your name can’t include numbers, symbols, or punctuation.
    • You can’t use non-standard capitalization.
    • You can only use characters from a single language.
    • You can’t include titles such as Reverend or Doctor.
    • You can’t use offensive or suggestive words.

As long as your name follows these rules, you shouldn’t have any issue changing it. If you do, you can contact Facebook to explain the problem, but don’t expect this to be an easy fix.

Be certain that you’re happy with the name you’re choosing to use, too. You won’t be able to change it again for at least 60 days.

    Issues With Your Name Change

To avoid becoming a victim of impersonation, scams, and phishing, Facebook has made it a policy that you must use your real name on your account. This is their way of ensuring the community remains safe from those who would do you and others harm through the use of the social networking platform.

The primary reasons you’d have any issues when attempting a name change would be:

    • Your name doesn’t follow Facebook’s name policy. This one is especially important as you’ll be immediately denied should any portion of the policy not be met.
    • Changing your name too frequently can cause problems. Facebook only allows you to change your name once every 60 days. Be sure the name you choose is the one you want before clicking the Save Changes button to avoid this becoming an issue.
    • You may have already been issued a confirmation email requesting that you confirm the name you’ve entered is the one you want. So check your inbox for messages from Facebook.
    • When wanting to confirm that the account you’re attempting to access is, in fact, your own, the name must match the one on your photo ID. This is put in place to protect your information and account from scammers. The name provided must match the name that appears on the item you provided them. To know which forms of ID are accepted, you can check out Facebook’s ID list .

If you’re still having trouble changing your name, you can fill out this form to request a name change and confirm your name .

Before you attempt this though, you should familiarize yourself with Facebook’s name guidelines. The name you use on Facebook should be “the name that your friends call you in everyday life,” according to Facebook’s Help section. It shouldn’t include a symbol, number, or “unusual capitalization.” It shouldn’t include characters from different languages. It also shouldn’t include a title (so if you’re a proud Dr., Mrs., or Captain, you’ll have to go without). You also can’t use a word or phrase instead of a name or include an offensive or suggestive word. The name should match what’s listed on your ID. However, a nickname is OK as long as it’s a variation of your given name—for example, Chris instead of Christopher.

If you want, you can also add a second name to your account in the “Details About You” setting of your profile. To do this, tap the About section on your profile, then Details About You. Under Other Names, select Add a nickname, a birth name…, and then the type of name you want to add.

Now you can enter the name, and if you check off “Show at top of profile,” Facebook will show this name alongside the main name tied to your Facebook account. I’ve found this feature useful for friends who’ve gotten married and changed their last name—they’ll often list their maiden name here as a secondary name.

If you violate these Facebook name rules, you have one of three choices. You can remove whatever Facebook finds offensive; you can send a copy of your driver’s license to confirm that what you’re using in fact what your name is, or Facebook will block your account. In some cases, you can challenge Facebook if it doesn’t believe your name is accurate, though. You just have to provide more information about your situation.

However, if you follow the guidelines above, your request for a name change should be totally fine.
