Rumors are flooding the internet that Disney is getting a new mascot called Figment who is replacing Mickey Mouse – but is it true?

People are going on crazy on Twitter, where one person wrote: “Is it true Mickey Mouse will no longer be the Disney mascot? Not really sure how they can lose the rights to their own character?”

“MICKEY MOUSE ISNT GOING TO BE THE DISNEY MASCOT ANYMORE??? Booooo,” said another very angry Disney fan.

The famous mouse made his Disney debut in November 1928 in a short film called Steamboat Willie and has been the franchise’s mascot ever since.

Has Disney got a new mascot?

No. Don’t worry, Disney is not getting a new mascot and Mickey Mouse isn’t going anywhere. The whole thing is a hoax that started on TikTok and is fooling everyone online.

The trick says that the purple dragon called Figment, from the Epcot theme park, will be the new mascot. However, it’s not true.

Mickey Mouse remains the face of Disney in 2023 and teh franchise has no plans to get a new mascot any time soon. Phew!

Mickey Mouse TikTok hoax goes viral

The hoax was created by a TikTok account called Mouse Trap News which shares fake Disney news to try and trick internet users.

If you visit the profile, you’ll see that the bio says “Real Disney news that is 100% fake” and the whole account consists of fake Disney news.

In the video, which has already had more than 1.2 million views in just eight hours, the TikTok user says: “Breaking news Mickey Mouse will no longer be the official Disney mascot.”

“Disney has decided to make their new mascot Figment,” it continues before even giving a rather convincing reason as to why Disney is doing this.

The video claims Disney’s Mickey Mouse copyright is due to expire in 2024 and says all future branding will “focus on Figment instead”.

Mouse Trap News also has its own website which shared a fake news article about the new mascot – which again is entirely false.

Who is Figment?

Figment is a small purple dragon who is the mascot of the Imagination pavilion at Disney’s Florida theme park Epcot.

Sometimes seen wearing a yellow sweater, Figment appears on lots of Epcot merchandise and has been mascot since the pavilion opened in 1982.

The dragon was created by former senior vice president of creative development in Walt Disney Imagineering Tony Baxter.

He came up with the name after watching an episode of Magnum P.I. in which Higgins says: “Don’t tell me [the goat is] a figment of my imagination. Figments don’t eat rare tropical flowers.”

In the original attraction, called Dreamfinder, a scientist teaches Figment how to use his imagination, and he still appears around the park in 2023.

Figment has also been in a number of short films, had a cameo in Inside Out and Toy Story 4, and is part of a five-part Marvel and Disney miniseries.

Plus, a film centered around him is currently in the works, Deadline reveals, which was announced in September 2022.
