Christopher Wright, 38, was in downtown Chattanooga Thursday night to meet with fellow Baylor School alumni when he became embroiled in a dispute with Darryl Roberts, a career criminal known as “Too Tall,”
Surveillance footage shows Wright, a father of three, including an 8-week-old newborn, interacting with Roberts, 57, and another guy before leaving. According to authorities, Wright then turns to say something to the two males, and Roberts replies by approaching him and firing his revolver at Wright’s head.
Wright was taken to a neighbouring hospital and died. Robert fled the scene swiftly, but was apprehended by police the next day in a joint search with the US Marshals Service and the ATF.
According to court records, Roberts has a lengthy criminal history that includes assaults, robberies, narcotics offences, burglaries, traffic violations, and an aggravated robbery case in 2000. One of his most memorable arrests was for a home invasion on Hixson Pike in 2010, during which he fired six rounds through a bedroom door.
According to authorities, there was an adult and four children behind the door, but no one was hurt. Despite being arrested more than a dozen times, records show that Roberts was never imprisoned for more than six months. Roberts is now facing first-degree murder charges and is being held in the Hamilton County Jail on $5 million bond.
The Cause of Death
Wright, a high school football and baseball player who attended Yale University before returning to Chattanooga to conduct business through many companies until establishing himself as a partner at Alderman Enterprises, was mourned by Baylor School President Chris Angel.
“The Baylor School community is heartbroken to learn of the sudden death of Christopher Wright ’03, who would have celebrated his 20th class reunion this weekend with his classmates,” Angel said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his family for their devastating loss.”
Since Wright’s death, a GoFundMe page for his family has garnered nearly $400,000 in donations. He revealed that Wright and his wife had only recently welcomed their third kid into the world.
Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly called the incident “an isolated, senseless, and brazen act of gun violence” and suggested it was unavoidable. “The sad reality is that sometimes proactive policing only goes so far, especially when dealing with the type of person who would commit a murderous act of apparent anger in front of witnesses on the steps of their own apartment block under blue light. from a well-known public security camera,” Kelly stated in a statement.
