Chris Asare-Budu Accident; 19 Years Old 10th Grader At Atlee High School, Chris Asare-Budu Passes Away After He Was Struck By A Freight Train

A male 15-year-old was struck and killed by a train Wednesday morning close to Atlee High and Chickahomony Middle School. The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the incident.

“Buckingham Branch Railroad called Hanover Emergency Communications at approximately 7:58 a.m. to report that a pedestrian had been struck by a train on the tracks just west of the Cool Spring Road crossing and close to the Cool Spring West subdivision.”

Hours were spent stopping the train as the authorities looked into it.

According to the neighbors, local kids cross the rail tracks on their way to school. The two schools and the community are divided by the tracks.

Neighbors claim that when the roads are congested, children will simply run through the tracks. Most of the tracks are blocked off by a fence, however it abruptly ends in one area of the neighborhood. The opening offers a clear passage and simple access to the railroads.

In an attempt to get it fixed, neighbors in the Cool Spring West subdivision claim to have called the police, but to no avail.

They have informed me that once they cross the fence, that is not their property, therefore they will come out and speak with the children, but there is nothing they can do about it. “It’s CSX,” remarked neighbor Suzan Hart.

Please stay away from the tracks as they are not on a timetable, are moving quickly, and there is nothing they can do. I can tell he tried to stop since I heard that whistle, but he couldn’t just stop.

Hart claims that as of late, she has heard the train’s driver honking more frequently, which she interprets as his signal to children to get off the tracks. She claims to have heard the horn early on Wednesday.

Hart remarked, “You can just walk right through there and over there.” “At first, I assumed they were passing through a fence cutout, but then—I guess because I’m parenting my six-year-old granddaughter—I started to become inquisitive. So, the fence merely ends where I strolled over there this summer.

The inquiry is being handled by the Hanover Sheriff’s Office, which had to determine whether it fell under its or CSX’s purview. Police are advising the public to exercise caution and adhere to best practices when near the tracks.

Captain Terry Sullivan of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office stated, “In any investigation, we do, if it is an accident of any kind, there is always a preventative measure that we will do after the fact to make sure we look at ways to better educate our community and safety practices.

“We always look at working closely with our community to identify those ways we can keep our community safe, so dependent upon the investigation and what is identified.”
