Bilkis Bano was born on 1 January 1938 in the Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. She is 84 years old now. Bilkis Dadi received National and International coverage during the sit-in protest in Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, this protest began on 15 December 2019 and lasted until 24 March 2020.

For her role at the forefront in the Shaheen Bagh protest, Dadi came to be known as one of the ‘Dadi’s of Shaheen Bagh or Grandmothers of Shaheen Bagh and also went on to be listed in the Time 100 List (Annual Listicle of the 100 most influential people in the world) and BBC’s 100 Women (Role of Women in the 21st Century) in 2020.

Bilkis Dadi was also named “Woman of the Year” in The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims (Ranks the Most Influential Muslims in the World) for 2020.

Bilkis Dadi did not receive any formal education. She only grew up reading the Quran Sharif (a Central Religious text of Islam believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God).

Bilkis Dadi sat with 2 of her friends Sarwari (75) and Asma Khatoon (90) and hundreds of Muslims under an enclosed tent at Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, and blocked a major highway in Delhi, for more than 3 months.

Bilkis Dadi herself did not miss a single day of the protest. Even in Delhi’s winter, she sat at the protest site from 8 AM in the morning every day and also took part in the open mics at the protest site.

During the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest, Bilkis Dadi attempted to join the protests but was then escorted away by the police. She expressed unity with the farmers at an event at the Press Club of India.
