Whether you’re commuting, on the search for a lunch break snack or simply fancy a quick bite, nothing beats a Subway sandwich… or so we thought.

But Subway now has a rival in the form of supermarket chain Aldi, which has launched its Metro rolls range in a bid to rival the subs we all know and love – but for a much lower price.

And, if a DIY sub isn’t your thing, Aldi’s press centre just revealed a range of pre-prepared subs are about to go on sale from its food-to-go counters.

Here’s what you need to know.

Fast-food fans compare Aldi’s roll range with Subway goodies

Eagle-eyed Aldi shoppers have spotted an alternative to Subway’s signature bread rolls on the shelves of the budget supermarket.

For 89p, you can pick up Aldi’s Metro rolls and DIY your own sandwich. As reported by the Hull Daily Mail, consumers can enjoy cheese and herb, wholegrain and Italian-style rolls, mirroring the choice offered at Subway.

News of the product was first picked up by a member of Facebook’s Extreme Couponing And Bargains Facebook group, alerting hundreds of other bargain hunters.

One person wrote: “I want to try Aldi’s Subway rolls so bad.”

Another shared: “Make my own Subway? Yes please.”

Supermarket to offer food-to-go subs

If you haven’t got time to buy separate rolls and ingredients for a DIY sarnie, Aldi has a solution. The Aldi press centre reports the supermarket is set to launch pre-made subs at its food-to-go counter.

The press release reads: “Crust around the corner, the Meatball Marinara, Triple Meaty Feast and Steak & Cheese sub rolls are set to land in Aldi’s food-to-go counters on 27 April.”

Aldi’s sub range is likely to set you back £2.19 which, the supermarket claims, is almost 40 per cent cheaper than similar Subway products.

HITC has reached out to Subway for comment.

Aldi draws inspiration from other fast-food chains

Aldi is also looking to rival another fast-food giant in the shape of McDonald’s, with the supermarket set to release three £1.99 wraps.

Likewise, Hull Live reports the German supermarket brand also offers its own versions of Domino’s pizza.

But can they really taste as good as the real thing? There’s only one way to find out.
